Sri Lanka's main ethnic minority Tamil party secured a landslide victory in a provincial poll that has threatened to rekindle animosity between the government and Tamils, four years after the military crushed separatist rebels and ended a 26-year war.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the former political proxy of the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels, won 30 seats in the 38-member provincial council in the former northern war zone, election officials said on Sunday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa's ruling coalition won 7 seats, while a Muslim party won one.

It was the first provincial council election in the north in 25 years and was held after the government came under international pressure to restore democracy.

Defeat for the government, the most humiliating set-back for Rajapaksa since he assumed office in 2005, is largely symbolic.

But the TNA's victory shows that the defeat of the rebels in 2009 did nothing to dampen calls for autonomy among Tamils, who make up about 14 percent of Sri Lanka's 20 million people.

"This is a strong message to the international community to say that Tamils need a political solution," said a voter in the northern town of Jaffna, computer studies lecturer T. Sivaruban.

"It could be a separate state or power sharing within a united Sri Lanka," said Sivaruban, 33.

The TNA won more than 84 percent of the votes in Jaffna, once the heartland of the rebel movement, 81 percent in Kilinochchi, the de-facto capital of the separatists, and 78 percent in Mullaitivu, where thousands of civilians were said to have been killed in May 2009, when government forces moved in to defeat the rebels.

"It's a great vindication of the political stand we've taken and our people have stood up without bowing down to violence and intimidation," M. A. Sumanthiran, a TNA legislator, told Reuters. "Now the president has to bow down to this verdict."

A foreign observer said the election commission had done a very good job inside the polling centres, though it did not have any control over what went on outside, where some voters reported attacks and intimidation.

PRESSURE

The government has accused the TNA of renewing calls for a separate state through its push for the devolution of power. The TNA says it wants devolution in a united Sri Lanka, not a separate state.

Many voters have called for the return of land that they say the army has occupied. The are also calling for the withdrawal from the north of the army, which was accused of human rights abuses in the final stages of the war.

Some voters have also called for a separate state, for decades the goal of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who launched their war in 1983 to end what Tamil activists saw as systematic discrimination by Sri Lanka's Sinhalese majority.

Election officials said they received "plenty" of complaints, including complaints of intimidation of voters during the polling, but turnout was about 68 percent.

The military has rejected any suggestion of involvement by the security forces in election-related violence of any sort.

Rajapaksa has a majority of more than two-thirds in the national parliament and controls the eight other provinces.

The president has faced international pressure to bring to book those accused of war crimes committed at the end of the war, and to boost reconciliation efforts.

His government has rejected accusations of rights abuses and Rajapaksa in July ordered an inquiry into mass disappearances, mostly of Tamils, at the end of the war.

@Skyline :

Why was the former political proxy of the LTTE, as the Article claims, allowed to run elections ? :what:

Shouldn't the Political Front of a Terrorist Organization be banned ! :undecided:

We've got a few such parties here in Pakistan too who need to be banned ASAP !

We have to bring them to mainstream politics. Recently they are promoting racism that's why they won some districts in huge gap. This will take some years to become normal.

Second thing, GoSL cannot ban such groups coz President Mahinda's party also have support from some LTTE groups.

The US Embassy in Colombo today called for an transparent and independent investigation into the various attacks during the Northern Provincial Council polls and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly.

We congratulate the people of Sri Lanka on their historic Provincial Council elections on September 21. The high turn-out and participation in all three of the provinces holding elections is a victory for the democratic process, the US Embassy said.

The Embassy however said it remains concerned about reports of elections violence and was particularly troubled at reports of the involvement by uniformed individuals in these acts.

A process free of violence and intimidation in the Northern Province is required for greater civilian administration and to help further the reconciliation process four years after the war, the US Embassy said.

It said that democracy is not simply about elections, however, and more must be done to ensure that Sri Lankans of all communities can live in the peace and dignity that they deserve. (Colombo Gazette)

Good for the democracy.... I hope it it will bring fruits to the people

But if they ask for autonomy is will be a huge problem. Then corrupted parties will rule the north Sri Lanka and people will never enjoy development just like India.

Well, you see India's system is not successful at all. Regional parties are corrupted as hell and they can even dictate the foreign policy. We don't want such situation in Sri Lanka. I would say, giving autonomy would be a big mistake.

well, thats the magic..if Regional party can't raise the voice on Foreign policy, then its not different from an One Party rule who will dictate several important fields like Foreign Policy,Economy and Home ministry..right???don't know why you're thinking that suppressing the voice of a party on an important issue like foreign policy is good..

yes,India is far from perfect..parties are corrupt..but is there any party which is free from corruption??atleast in India, corrupt politicians get caught and languish in jail(whatever),unlike some..also,we can raise our voice against anything..

One important thing to keep in mind is, over country is significantly small in land mass. Therefore we can't afford to give autonomy to a major province. Sri Lanka is totally fine with this system. Just look at the recent growth statistics. In my opinion, the reason India couldn't achieve the same growth rate as China is because of this system. Regional parties do whatever they want. I also heard that recently Jayalalitha spent 100 million rupees for her daughter's wedding from the state budget. Under a strong central government, such scenarios can be avoided.

first..why India can't achieve the growth of China isn't what matters here..in democracy, you've to face many hurdles which an autocracy can easily bypass..but its a fact that autocracy always bites the dust in the end..you can see ample evidence of this around the world..

second..I've no idea about Jaylalitha's property..it may be in crores or in thousands of crores..only IT department is interested in this if she hasn't paid tax properly..

third..I didn't support autonomy..but Freedom of Speech is something man gets idf he/she is part of a democracy..if one regional party can push central govt over a foreign relation matter,I don't see if any harm has been done.

by the way,Its good to see that the vote went mostly peacefully, and UPFA bites the dust..

whats the impact of this vote in SL politics??will it add a new equation??

Actually I don't care about democracy or freedom of speech as long as there's development. What good would democracy do if you don't have food to eat? If a regional party goes against the interest of the country, then there's no reason it should be tolerated.

As long as they don't gain autonomy I don't think there will be a greater difference.
