What's new

Sri Lanka seriously considering purchase of HAL Tejas jets from India.

.
This is why India did not want them to buy JF17 from Pakistan?

The point is, why did they relent to our request?

We don't hold their economy for ransom, they are not our autonomous territory or any territory for that matter.

Besides, this news is unlikely.

Any external contract doesn't make sense for HAL at this point. They have to make 120+ jets just for IAF. With 24 max production units per year (at peak) will take them 5 years just for our own demands. SL cannot wait that long.

So either it will be the FC-1 or maybe even KAI A-50 from Korea. Philippines is using them and are highly satisfied.

Why do the lankans even need fighter jets? The war is over! Try improving the state of northern Sri Lanka and spend the money on attack helicopters.

The max Sri Lanka would order is 1sqd or 15, 16 aircrafts that too over a period of 4 to 5 years to save cost. HAL will have the time to increase production after the deal is signed.

Look at the Rafael deal, just 3 aircrafts will be delivered with 2 years of the signing of the deal. This means that the French does not have the facility currently to increase its production to meet IAF needs, but will ramp it up after the deal gets signed.
Similarly if HAL gets a assured customer, it will ramp up its production rate.

To ensure the war never starts again.
Remember how Nehru believed that India won't have to fight any war as it is surrounded by peace loving countries like China and Pakistan, and almost destroyed our military might which eventually led to '62.

Anyways, Sri Lanka would not want itself to be turned into another Maldives, which without external protection can be captured even by pirates.

.
Siri Lanka cancelled the deal cause India put pressure on it. Even though, Sri Lanka won't induct Tejas you understand it?

Well I would be amazed if HAL can open a foreign production line along with meeting our own requirement. They are good at developing products but manufacturing is their weakness. The last time they manufactured an indigenous jet was HAL Marut HF-24 at record pace because we were at war with Pakistan.

In any case, our neighbouring countries actually benefit a lot from India-China competition eh?

Healthy way to compete rather than abusing each other or threatening.

I'd love to see countries armed with a mix of your and our weapons in the near future.

There are also a couple of MENA countries interested. Remember Bahrain air show? If they end up placing orders, HAL will have a real tough time juggling our domestic needs. HAL isn't known exactly for rapid manufacturing after they finished making HF-24 Marut.

3 or 36? France ramped up production because Egypt has already ordered these jets 18 of them.

You'd be surprised that we historically have had no enmity with SL. The LTTE episodes was just by Dravida supremacists, funded by shady agencies and NGOs in certain western countries. I have already discussed this elsewhere but will tell you later.

Also, Maldives is under our protection. Yes there are some gripes with Yameen but with a regime change there, they will remain under our protection.

Pirates controlling Maldives is not very good even for our commercial ships and IN cannot always dedicate military escorts for every ship that leaves Indian ports. Cochin port is directly in that region.

On Topic: HAL isn't used to rapid manufacturing for more than 3 decades. Cannot compare it to France or USA or Russia where arms is a regular business and they aren't burdened by Indian bureaucracy.

I know HAL has potential but it remains untested.

It has to prove itself.

Absolutely no guessing. Remember how the Pakistani media was going full retard on the news of Sri Lanka planning to purchase Chinese JF-17 and the deal will be signed soon. Then suddenly the Indian media reported something else.

Btw, what happened to that JF-17 deal now? with both Sri Lanka and Malaysia?

Well it's your Indian media running around like headless Chicken, prone to issuing a statement a day.....you need to look beyond the Indian psyche to get the real picture..... how long has the Indian MMRCA deal been blowing hot and cold.....but Indians expect the JF-17 deal with Sri Lanka concluded overnight.....no delivery of a JF-17 to a foreign customer expected before 2017.....until then the Indians should leave the Champagne on ice.

Tejas is a technology demonstrator,i just dont get it how the hell will it be exported

. .
no,its counter claim to many pakistanis claiming that its indigenous but actually its more similar to su30mki then tejas in terms of indigenization which none of us claim to be indian.
sir with due respect i dont think you can compare mki with jft JFT's were designed with complete new design and MKI was upgraded Su30 not a new thing

that was not my argument.it was on indigenous contributions of respective countries which is basically the same.russian had an upgraded su27 prototype which was jointly developed into su30mki for us and later su30sm for russians.
in jft, chinese did all the work in the early part and then you joined and made it pak-specific just like su30mki.
only major difference is that russian are also buying the version made for us but chinese are not.
makes u think.

Their is not much of difference between both the projects

Su 30Mki is the customised version of Su 30 tailor made according to our Airforce Requirement....

On the other hand

Jf 17 is nothing but the customised version of FC-1 tailor made according to the requirement of you Airforce ...At the end of the day its China who owns the IP right for FC-1....

you dont induct 120 units of technology demonstrator.

face the reality, not many countries want to buy a jet whose only selling point is its price.even there it doesnt do great.
The Indians now refer to the MKI as the 8th wonder.....perhaps Tejas is in line to become the 9th wonder.
ofcourse,su30mki and tejas are two of our millions of gods.

Buddy the Lankans have sophisticated weaponry their military army is huge! There is no chance of that but they must realise we must coexist plus in my view tejas is a better plane but hey I might be told I am biased
