Sri Lanka Saturday announced the completion of a $2.6 billion IMF bailout, but it was seeking fresh loans to support an economy emerging from decades of ethnic war. The International Monetary Fund on Friday released the final instalment of the bailout agreed in July 2009, two months after Colombo defeated Tamil rebels in a major offensive to end the drawn-out conflict.

The drawing down the final instalment of the bailout package marked the longest engagement Sri Lanka has had with the IMF and the single largest facility from a multilateral institution, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka said. "Sri Lankan authorities now look forward to the continued close engagement with the IMF and intend to discuss the possibility of financial support for its economic development agenda..." the bank said in a statement.

It did not say how much Sri Lanka hoped to secure from the IMF by way of fresh loans, but finance ministry sources said Colombo was looking at more than $500 million as a first step. The original July 2009 IMF bailout was secured when the island's foreign reserves had dropped to a dangerously low level of $1 billion, or just sufficient to support a couple of week's imports.

Since then, Sri Lanka has built up reserves which could finance imports of up to three and a half months, according to the bank. However, a $10 billion trade deficit at the end of last year caused the local currency to depreciate by about 18 percent this year.

Last week, Sri Lanka raised $1 billion through a bond issue that was over subscribed by a record 10.5 fold despite volatility in global markets, according to the central bank. Sri Lanka's economy grew 8.3 percent last year, up from 8.0 percent in 2010, the first full year after government forces crushed the Tamil Tiger rebels. However, the IMF has said it forecasts Sri Lanka's economy to grow at a slower rate this year.

India should Help Sri-Lanka out . High time we move towards healing some wounds rather then festering animosity .

Absolutely No Need to. Ealam should have been finished by the IPKF.

If it was US, Russia or China, the Task would have been done long back and the Lankans would no they are no better than the Georgias.

India should block it unless srilankan govt. implement 13th amendment in the constitution.Rather india must put pressure on srilanka on every international forum to see that this amendment is implemented.

India is already helping SL. Check this out:

he Yaldevi train is set to resume services from Colombo to Jaffna next year ahead of schedule, Indian High Commissioner Ashok. K. Kantha said. He said the Indian government was currently taking all necessary measures to ensure that the service would resume within the next year.

The High Commissioner made these remarks at an International Research Conference held in Jaffna, organized by the academics of the Jaffna University.

Also read the comments by Lankans on this article...not a single word of thanks but rather they ridicule India. So much for the help.

Yup! Go ahead and help them so they can buy more bullets to take down our fishermen.

India should bail them out. Do not push them too much either. But where it matters, squeeze them like in fishermen killings. Only shrewd diplomacy will win the day for India.

Dude check the comments on the link in post# 08. India is helping build a railway line and Lankans are talking as if they are entitled to Indian help. If India bails out SL, it will also end up the same.

We can't expect goodwill either from SL tamilians or Sinhalese at this time. This is about our relationship with the SL government and the politicians. Indian diplomacy stumps me. Hambantotta - they declined the SL request. SL human rights violation - wanted to voted in support of SL (though later the central government hand was forced) - First one should have been yes and the second one should have been no (without being forced). Likewise in Nepal as well - did not support royals against Maoist and now we see anti-Indian Maoist in power.

I don't think specific race will get police or land powers, current government has 2/3 power in the parliament so they can change constitution easily. These are truly Sri Lankan matters Indian government or Indians have no right to mention what we need to do. Our leaders will take what we need to do next. so it's better India/Indians mind their own business. ;)

The Monarch was getting unpopular day by day. If we had installed him by force, we would have ended up in a similar situation like in Operation Ajax in Iran...where the coup against Shah was destroyed, Shah was brought back but led to the permanent souring of relation b/n US & Iranian People. See the bright side ...by removal of Monarchy the Maoists in Nepal lost all reasons to fight for and now is just a main stream political party.
