Mar 19, Colombo: Iraq and Sri Lanka on Wednesday have held discussions on establishing direct air links between the two countries, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Iraq's Undersecretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations, Nazar Al-Kheer Allah has met the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Iraq, Sumith Nakandala in Baghdad on Wednesday and discussed strengthening bilateral relations in several areas.

In a statement released to Iraqi media, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the meeting with the Sri Lankan envoy "tackled the means of promoting bilateral relations in various fields within the framework of the Iraqi- Sri Lankan joint committee."

The two sides have discussed the possibility to establish a permanent fair for products of Sri Lanka and inaugurating a direct airline between Iraq and Sri Lanka in order to facilitate the travel and promote the commercial exchange, the statement added.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen led a 16-member Sri Lankan delegation to the eighth session of Sri Lanka Iraq Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation (JEC) held in Baghdad last month.

The discussions resulted in Iraq lifting ban on Sri Lanka's coco peat and opening their markets wider for Pure Ceylon Tea and 13 new Sri Lankan exports.
