Sri Lanka former war zone gets fibre optic network
Sri Lanka Telecom, the Sri Lanka's dominant fixed line operator, has commissioned a fibre optic network in the former northern war zone providing high speed links with the rest of the country and abroad.
The communications cable in the Jaffna peninsula was part of SLT's nation-wide network modernisation project called i-Sri Lanka providing high speed broadband services, a statement said.
"The 'i-Sri Lanka' network modernisation project will improve broadband access across the country by upgrading the existing copper-based access network with fibre optics.
"This will enable customers to enjoy high speed internet services delivered on the network, up to speeds of 20 Mega Bytes Per Second (Mbps)," SLT said.
Under the project, the company will expand and upgrade its network to provide customers with voice, internet and interactive television facilities across the country.
"It will provide a platform for private business networking, interactive entertainment, distance learning, online education, e-health, and much more," the statement said.
Minister of Information Technology, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the project will support setting up of information technology centres in villages in the north which is recovering from the 30-year ethnic war which ended in 2009.
The launch of the i-Sri Lanka project helps bridge the divide between Jaffna and the rest of the country in terms of access to world class telecommunications and broadband services bringing information and entertainment options to our customers," SLT chief executive Greg Young said.
