Sri Lanka finalises $1.12 bn port deal with China

I compared Mundra with Humbentota, you compared Mundra with China. Since Mundra is doubling in capacity every 3 to 4 years, come talk to me in a decade and we'll compare it with China.
Hambatonta is a smaller port which was just recently taken over, how can you compare. I am comparing ports in China and ports run by Chinese to show you how we can turn Hambatonta around. The facilities at the port is top notch, all supplied by the same port machinery supplier for Mundra, ZPMC.

If it was a scam, then India is pretty stupid right? What you don't realize is India is using those bank facilities to finance her projects.

How much did India contribute to AIIB, that miniscule sum can't even finance much.:D

India REALLY was stupid. Yes. Thankfully we're staying away from the radio active dump called OBOR. 10 Billion is not big for you, I'm so sorry- It's big for us. Next time don't come with begging bowl for OBOR like projects (you asked for 30 billion and when we asked you to screw yourself you said we had no 'vision')

I'm not kidding you too...ask the americans to settle your balance of payments. My my you don't do it even in 2007 when billions were getting wiped out in your financial crisis. I wonder why.
We are a net creditor for US, you do know that right? What was wiped out bro? Can you tell me, any source?

yeah, then why aren't you 'turning around' humbentota I wonder? It'll fail, just like the Colombo Port city and you'll take all their cash nonetheless.

We begged, you wanted to join and we let you join so you can access cheap financing too. China has no need for 10 bil$ in financing bro.

a man who doesn't know about the 2008 financial crisis is not a man- that proves you're a 9 year old and it all suddenly makes sense.

Colombo port city again was not managed by the Chinese, it was running smoothly until Rajapaksa was ousted.

2008 financial crisis, China was the bedrock for Asia economy. You know that? Again what was wiped out from China? Can you explain?

Oh that makes sense. I thought we gave china billions for AIIB, but I get your point, it might as well have been thrown into the sea beside Humbentota.

You delusional man.

What you don't realize was China absorbed the supply demand which America could't absorb due to the crisis, thereby reducing the fallout, had China crash like the US, the whole world financial system would have collapsed. In 2008, China was still growing at over 9%, helping to offset the world economic crisis. We were the bedrock of the world economy at that time.

for an export oriented economy tthere is no 'offset'. But that's for a different thread. Not this. here the point- Hubentota will just plod along, Colombo port city will fail. This is entirely because china misled the SL on potential of project and then went on to mismanage it. And china did it because it wanted to make money off the hapless lankans.

You have the right to have your own opinion, but I see it differently. :D

Ya right, the Indians were using LTTE as a bargaining chip to hold SL down. Remember your Tamil votebank?

Were there ever any Chinese military presence? And you think if Rajapaksa or another Anti Indian PM comes in, he won't revise that clause?
If you can bag BD PM Hasina - the very epitome of "thy name is the RAW agent" - anything is possible in that corner of the globe!!!!! BD PM used to replace the maid in the Indian presidential palace and cook for the President during her visits to India, but even she is working for China now!!!! No matter who are in power the Chinese folks offer something that they can't refuse. No matter how much India invests on their proxies China can always out bid them!!!! It's a matter of how wide one can open the wallet and how less a penny pincher one is!!!!! Bhutan appears to be the latest test case now!!!!!

And, what a reversal of the fate now!!! It was like the Chinese companies were working for the companies in my home town, but now it's reversed!!! We are now working for them and taking their diktats!!!! Not to mention all the technologies developed spending trillions of US tax payers money are being transferred to them on a gold platter!!!! And, that too just for the survival, so that layoffs can be pushed back by one more quarter!!!! Even the best of the Trump properties are sold to the Chinese highest bidders!!!!

Sri Lanka has signed a $1.1bn (£837m) deal with China for the control and development of the southern deep-sea port of Hambantota.

The deal had been delayed by several months over concerns that the port could be used by the Chinese military.

The government has given assurances that China will run only commercial operations from the port, on the main shipping route between Asia and Europe.

Sri Lanka's government says money from the deal will help repay foreign loans.

Under the proposal, a state-run Chinese company will have a 99-year lease on the port and about 15,000 acres nearby for an industrial zone.

The plan envisages the eviction of thousands of villagers but the government says they will be given new land.

China has pumped millions of dollars into Sri Lanka's infrastructure since the end of a 26-year civil war in 2009.

Hambantota port, overlooking the Indian Ocean, is expected to play a key role in China's Belt and Road initiative, otherwise known as the new Silk Road, which will link ports and roads between China and Europe.

The initiative is being keenly watched by regional trade rivals including India and Japan.

Opponents of the project said they feared the area being turned into a Chinese colony. There were also concerns that the Chinese navy could use the port as a base.

In a move to ease those concerns, the Sri Lankan government announced a revised deal to cut the Chinese firm's stake to 70%. Officials also made assurances that the port would not be used by the Chinese military.

"We are giving the country a better deal without any implications on security," Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told reporters on Friday.

He said the deal would help Sri Lanka manage its foreign debt.

The BBC's Azzam Ameen in Colombo says that the signing took place at the Sri Lanka Port Authority premises in the capital. The deal was inked at 10:43 (05:13 GMT) - considered an auspicious time.

Good luck to Sri Lanka... Bangladesh should divert some of the cargoes to Sri Lanka instead of Singapore if that helps.
