Sri Lanka coast guard to deploy craft against Indian poachers

Sri Lanka's coast guard is to deploy it's growing fleet of craft against Indian fishermen poaching in the Sri Lanka's northern waters, an official said.

The coast guard this week took delivery of a patrol boat built by the Sri Lanka navy and is to get more craft, including four fast patrol boats also from the Sri Lanka navy and later two surveillance vessels, Daya Dharmapriya, director-general of Sri Lanka's coast guard said.

"At the moment we're focusing on fisheries protection. Indian trawlers poaching in the north is a big problem," he told.

The defence ministry has ordered coast guard vessels should be sent to the north, he said.

Dharmapriya said that although the coast guard wanted to focus on protecting marine resources and habitat, it had to deploy boats initially against poaching in northern waters as it was a more immediate problem.

Patrolling on the Indian side of the maritime border is handled by India's own coast guard, considered a non-military organisation.

Therefore the deployment of a civilian force like the coast guard against Indian poachers would be more acceptable, he added.

Thousands of Indian fishing craft have been crossing the maritime boundary at night and fishing in Sri Lankan waters, leaving before dawn.

The poaching became a diplomatic issue recently owing to the killing of two Indian fishermen and subsequent detention of over a 100 Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan fishermen.

India should deploy its corvettes to protect its citizens from being killed by foreigners.

Will we send a frigate with our fishermen to protect them......??????

Will we send a frigate with our fishermen to protect them......??????

A corvette each for fishing boat whenever they go fishing from coastal Kanyakumari, rameshwaram, tutucurin, etc????

Sounds like a bad suggestion.

Instead the boats should be equipped with GPS system so that the fishermen knows their boundaries and dont venture into lankan waters.

Also another cost effective mechanism is communication centre where the boats can be tracked from inland and can warn the fishermen who wanders and its also useful inc ase somebody attacks within terrirorial waters we can produce it as proof..

This argument of we will send corvette, frigates for fishing boats seems a lame one for me.

Its not like sending a corvette for every fishing trawler. But regular patrols once in few weeks will keep reminding the Sri Lankans than it is not going to help their cause by firing on the Tamil fishermen.

There already exists a patrolling team in mandam coast near dhanushkodi .

And its the job of coast guards and i think the present central government is too much concerned with the west coast in regards after the attack of mumbai.. But steps like starting a coast guard academy in Kochi 2 weeks back will speed up coastal security.. Sending corvettes is kinda silly for a big nation of our stature.

Dude, he is absolutely right.

What joke do you see in that?

Sri Lanka also has a simple answer

Sri Lanka Navy will begins to jointly patrol with Chinese Navy

Colombo can send some PLAN ships from southern waters to northern waters of Sri Lanka

PLAN will be happy about that........

Fine if not the Corvettes then atleast the FACs of the Indian Navy must be utilised. It is just pathetic to see the Central Govt doing nothing when fishermen are killed by the Sri Lankans.

All the bloody netas in Delhi say are they will take it up with Colombo. But nothing has changed and the firings have not reduced.
