Squid stocks in Korean waters depleted by Chinese overfishing

It's early morning at Jumunjin port in the eastern coastal city of Gangneung, and fishermen are busy transporting their catch to market.

The commercial fishing season for squid opened a month ago, but the fishermen are far from happy.

(Korean, )
"At this time of year, we would normally catch between four to six thousand squid, but this year, we've only been catching between 6-hundred to 1-thousand."

In fact, the total catch in waters off Korea's eastern Gangwon-do Province last month was just a quarter of that recorded during the same period last year.

Many fishermen are opting to keep their boats in the port as they know going out is not profitable anymore.

Squid catches off the east coast have dropped by roughly a half over the space of five years.
Irregular water temperatures could be one cause, but most believe it's mainly down to overfishing by Chinese vessels.

After spawning in the East China Sea, the squid swim north through the East Sea in May and then move southward from September, but their route is cut short by Chinese fishermen who illegally poach the squid before they reach the southern waters.

(Korean, )
"If overfishing continues in Korean waters, it will eventually affect the country's natural resources."

There are currently an estimated 19-hundred Chinese fishing boats operating in North Korean waters, a one-thousand percent increase from ten years ago.

But as North Korea makes little effort to control Chinese fishing, South Korean authorities are struggling to come up with any effective countermeasures.

What about the Japanese whaling ship that make whales rarer.

There should be a 10 year fishing ban world wide!

Let the entire ecosystem replenish itself. Humanity can sustain itself on delicious vegetables, grains and dairy products.

Death sentence for people eating endangered species and death by a thousand cuts for anyone hurting a mountain gorilla.

That's a very harsh decision to make though, I for one would miss seafood. :D That said, tell that to Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd.

That's for purely scientific and research purposes.

I know this is a sensitive topic in Japan, but have you ever watched Whale Wars?

Vegetarian diet make you strong.

Watch this:

Thats right, it real. A lazy fat *** gorilla breaks a thick *** banana tree and eats it. Another gorilla drags a park ranger like he weighs nothing.

Dont believe it? Watch it again.

OT: are you really a vegetarian ? I was thinking of going lacto-ovo....

But the pork and beef is too tempting...

@Nihonjin1051 so must increase our coast guard activity in Japanese territorial waters so Chinese never dare to fish in territorial waters . You are to nice to Chinese so you now see what happens when too nice to Chinese they smile at you and take advantage. Korea now is drain of natural resources. Korea lesson is lesson for us Japanese. I think is very important lesson I think we must start sinking illegal fishing boats.

China does need to implement measures to limit some of its fishermen. They're using nets with such small gaps that almost nothing escapes. The selfish ones want big profit for a few years, but they're going to starve for decades if they deplete the stock.

Excellent, discussing about Sea Shepherd's campaigns in Antarctica with you is a whole lot easier that way. I recall that in an episode of the first season, the Japanese interpreter of the Steve Irwin crew was interviewed and her face was covered by a black balaclava, for she fears reprisals to herself and her family in Japan. Reputation-wise, she stated that Sea Shepherd is regarded as a terrorist organisation by the public, similar to Al-Qaeda. In the third season, footages of various news broadcasts were shown involving the arrest of Pete Bethune, the captain of the Ady Gil who boarded the Shōnan Maru 2, a security ship of the whaling fleet which sunk Bethune's vessel. The footages showed protesters demanding a harsh sentence for him, with a poster reading "punish him heavily" ( :o: ) . Interestingly enough he founded his own organisation, Earthrace Conservation, probably named after the former name of the Ady and he has disassociated with Sea Shepherd since then.

Well, Sea Shepherd has drawn lots of fire from various governments of the world, not only Tokyo, which also want to catch Paul Watson and his members. Nevertheless, by the looks of it the SSCS is growing strong as the Neputune's Navy has expanded to eight ships. Not so long ago they had to make do with merely the Steve Irwin as far as I know (the first two seasons featured merely the Steve Irwin and in the third and fourth they had three vessels at their disposal).

This is why Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd exist in the first place but it's not just the Japanese.
