Sports Shooting/Hunting Gear discussion

I actually once faced a life and death situation and the only thing that saved my *** punching the man with my keys... Since then I don't take chances, I like to be prepared.

Oh I can appreciate being prepared, it is just that the conditions that require such level of preparedness are not exactly civilized, no offence intended, Sir.

None taken... My dear family member Captain Alamdar Hussain Shaheed , used to call me the Wizard because of the amount of junk that would come out of my bag when we went camping. If you don't know, the Wizard was an American children's TV show:

It is a sad commentary that you guys feel the need to carry such weapons every day, unless you are out in the boonies. :D
I actually do not carry any firearms, neither do I intend to. A brown dude conceal carrying in US is calling for trouble.
As far as pocket knives, they are not weapons but tools. I am an engineer first and then a manager, (at least in my head), I like to get my hands dirty, and Knife or a multi tool comes handy. Stripping cables, breaking LLID's, to cutting thermal insulation, scrapping gunk off actuators to slicing apples. It's one of the most versatile tools to have. And then Worst case scenario, not bad to have a knive in you pocket if god forbid stuff does go bad some day.

keeping myself to .22 nice shooting there. by the way
I would go for bolt action for accuracy of subsonic rounds and economy as well :)

to start off I am looking at about 50 to little over 100 meters give or take . looking for a small game rifle which I can also use against the field vermin/ pests (foxes and pygmy hogs etc). I have always used open/ iron sight rifles, my scoped experience stops at air rifles. I would like to buy a 10x scope to ensure a humane kill (of hogs, rabbits & foxes I mean)

living mostly in the cities and Father being a strict law abiding one meant there was never a chance to own anything exotic or very expensive (he even had our British decommissioned).

going forward something customizable re magazine, free floating the barrel and better scopes .. but thats for future.
I liked Merlin reviews by the way in addition to much known namers.

Hi,

Why do you want to shoot sub sonic rounds----? I very much doubt if sub sonic rounds are available and those too to civilians.

.22 is just a plinker rifle. For hogs you woud needs a .270 ----30.06 or a .308---. .308 is the best option----good muzzle velocity for the round---bullets readily available----not a lot of recoil as the 30.06.

For rabbits and foxes---indeed .223 is preferred---but .22 will work.

So---here are some answers from a website

Look at the size of the cartridge and then at the animal. About up to ten pounds of critter is what the .22 is designed for. It has certainly taken much bigger critters with a combination of skill and luck, but that is not what it was designed for. Professional assasins often prefer a silenced .22, but that does not mean that it was designed to be a manstopper. My late father in law once killed an elk with a .22 behind the ear, but that doesn't mean that it was designed to be an elk rifle and thus it is illegal to hunt elk with a .22. With any caliber, big or small, game is killed with shot placement. Ethical and successful hunting is done by matching the caliber to the game hunted.

'What can you hunt with a .22 rimfire', is the question on the table. Lot of variables go into the answer to this question. You can hunt anything you want to with it, question is, are you good enough to slip up on a sleeping Griz and dispatch same with a shot through the eye into the brain? If the answer is 'No', I recommend you stick to smaller, less dangerous (when pissed off) game, like squirels and rabbits,,, Glad to help.

Marlin would be on the cheaper side-----. Ruger and Mini Ruger ----Remington would be my choice---good quality and not too expensive.

Actually, any conceal carry permit raises the stakes for both sides, no matter what the skin color.

Now my commute is quite smaller, And I dont ride my motorcycle to work as much, All I carry is a Surefire Flashlight, water bottle, and a pocket Knife.

Marlboro reds????? That's what caught my attention.

What is the ruling on automatic firearms in your state.....allowed or not?
And how easy was it for you to get the permit for the hand guns?

Background check, std ffl paper work. There are no automatic weapons allowed to civilians In US, unless you have an class II permit or something like that, reserved for gunsmiths and manufacturing
Handguns have the same process.

Hi,

just keeping the option open in case I do get some "gifted" somehow otherwise I am just looking for an economic option and just like bolt action rifles as a personal preference and was just showing off some basic knowledge that accuracy is not lost due to the bolt action ones I will however like to move away from that discussion as my knowledge is very limited.

as for hogs, I am talking about the pygmy ones that are the size of an average dog not the big ones for then we use shot guns.

I understand why a small bore is prohibited from hunting big game because it causes undue stress and pain to the animal. its all about shot placement and that what I am aiming for (goes with the clinche) and want to shoot a lot to perfect my rusted skill as we all know accurate shooting proficiency is a diminishable skill.
I still have a 7.62 British carbine though for anything bigger I will see if I can get it scoped.

It used to be in a laptop bag, couple of years ago, these days edc is just in the pocket, Just a flashlight, knife or multi tool, safety glasses. that's it.
Keep a First Aid in both cars, suv and the motorcycle, the little red one fits inside the vstar classic tool storage box. I do have a bug out/hunting bag. Will post when I get a chance.

Gurh se yaad aya, have you ever tried Gurh made from what I am guessing is sap of Date tree? It's a bengali specialty called khajjur ka gurh.
wow didnt hear about that one other than the one from sugarcane
that will be something . high energy to keep you going. date milkshake is very filling and high energy,

you starting to sound like a Hippie
I despise hippies I know that puts a question mark to my role as a moderator but I cant help but think that
hippies are the most disconnected kind from real world, are clueless about the reality of life and are mostly pseudo liberals.
I came across an early 20 something girl who thought it was cruel to kill vermin (she used the word helpless unarmed rodents) in the fields and when she was told that these fields provide for the local community (low carbon footprint and all) and are a livelihood for the farming family and the amount of devastation done by the pests... she just dismissed it by saying that there are enough other fields and too many people in the city so its no big deal (as if saying if some of them including the farmers are deprived of food or money then its not bad).

I bet she would be "devastated" if she doesnt get her "organic food", Wifi signal or fresh Salad from the super market and would rather prefer someone else has to suffer instead of her.

ok enough gripe and ranting now. I assume you are not that kind looking at the "Pakwheels".
but I found your post "disturbing"

Yankies have access to them. although my preference for bolt action is only due to conservation of ammo and just affinity with the vintage design like you said , the kind of ranges we are talking about the semi and bolt action dont make much difference to accuracy.

yupp, it's the sw9ve same as yours. I have just one expensive kershaw folder, rest all are el-cheapo S&W, Jeep, Remington, made in china stuff. Looks cool and works for about a couple of years and then the torque screws start loosening up.

What was the soldiers kit in world war 2
re keeping pills for diarrhoea I have a story to share. people used to laugh at the conenets of our kit whenever I told them what I kept. but we knew better.
while travelling along the border with iran we came across a big family that had fallen ill due to a food gotten bad due to the heat of the day. most of them were vomiting and "more". our entire medical portion of the bag was exhausted which gave them much needed first aid relief before they could reach a settlement and further treatment. we practically saved some of them from expiring or getting seriously ill.

no one was laughing then

Picked this up from Karkhano a couple of years back;

Lost one of my S&Ws .. Had to move to another city... Bad luck struck.
