Why did Soviet Union actually invade Afghanistan?
awesome classical picture
Excellent photos
The soviets engaged in mass scale rapes inside Afghanistan which no doubt has had an effect on the psyche of Afghans.
People often think that the Soviet army - is the same as the US.Soviet army in Afghanistan 1988
Cold war porkies , that was designed to enrage global Muslim community so that many more would come to Afghanistan and fight Soviets.
It never invaded Afghanistan. The pro Soviet Govt invited Russki troops to help the socialist Govt. They came and started fighting those who wanted an Islamic govt. free from atheist influence.
Excellent photos
Afghanistan was Soviet underbelly. Bordering Soviet Central Asian Republics , what people don`t get that Communist party top brass , very atheist and very old by age , were terrified by prospect of Islamic revolution like that one in Iran (yes, they didn`t actually make any distinction Sunni-Shia).
Second , Afghanistan was en route to Indian Ocean , warm sea , and access to it is centuries old agenda in Moscow. From times of Peter the Great.
In April 1978 Afghanistan’s centrist government, headed by Pres. Mohammad Daud Khan, was overthrown by left-wing military officers led by Nur Mohammad Taraki. Power was thereafter shared by two Marxist-Leninist political groups, the People’s (Khalq) Party and the Banner (Parcham) Party—which had earlier emerged from a single organization, the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan—and had reunited in an uneasy coalition shortly before the coup. The new government, which had little popular support, forged close ties with the Soviet Union, launched ruthless purges of all domestic opposition, and began extensive land and social reforms that were bitterly resented by the devoutly Muslim and largely anticommunist population. Insurgencies arose against the government among both tribal and urban groups, and all of these—known collectively as the mujahideen (Arabic mujāhidūn, “those who engage in jihad”)—were Islamic in orientation.I take it you learn your history from bollywood.
Afghan vice president Hafizullah Amin assasinated the communist President Nur Mohammad Taraki. Soviet Special Forces then stormed the afghan presidential palace and assasinated Amin because he was considered an American double agent. Soviet forces then invaded because Brezhnev though the americans had designs on afghanistan.
