South Korea unveils design for future military transport aircraft

South Korea’s Korea Aerospace Industries, commonly known as KAI, has released a short promo video of its proposed design for the future military transport aircraft.

The released video doesn’t reveal much other than a shape that resembles pretty much every other aircraft in the class, as the Japanese C-2 or Ukrainian An-178. At the same time, the plane will be a multi-mission aircraft designed to haul cargo, carrying missiles, launch rockets into space and insert special operators, and refuel other aircraft, among other uses.

Last month, Yonhap News Agency also quoted the company’s Executive Vice President Ryu Kwang-su saying that KAI has already reached a consensus with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration on the need to develop future transport and multipurpose aircraft.


“Currently, there are 30 multipurpose and 70 transport planes operated by the Army, Navy and Air Force. We are targeting to replace the imported aircraft with domestically developed ones and advance to overseas markets with our own planes in the long term,” Ryu said.

According to open-source, the Republic of Korea Air Force operates C-130s and CN-235s, mainly for airlift operations.

If developed, the transport aircraft would be used for multiple purposes, including as a reconnaissance plane and a maritime patrol aircraft, as it shares the same platform as a midsized aircraft, Ryu added.

Approximately one year earlier, KAI reported that it will be able to build its own transport aircraft in seven years with an investment of about $2.7 billion.

Same KC390 type design. When I first brought it up. PDFers were like we don't have money, we don't need them, we are too cool to consider this plan, its immature. Well pretty soon same folks are gonna make 1000 page thread begging some gora nation for these aircraft pretty soon. Or as usual just buy from Iron Brother.

Nice design, it will be an alternative for Hercules users around the world starting in 2030. Indonesia in the other hand doesnt have any plan to make big military transport plane until 2030, so we may possibly buy them from Korean, particularly seeing our strategic relation and also close relation between Indonesia Aerospace and KAI Korea.

Actually if this project is to be opened to international partners I think we should join too... compared to the KFX project, we can actually contribute more this time as we have had plenty of experience building and designing high wing transport planes (albeit all turboprop)...

Actually South Korea first asked Indonesia to be partner for their turboprop commercial planes, but Indonesia doesnt show any interest since we have already N 245 and R 80 plane program where N 245 is a modification of CN 235 in which Korea doesnt have stake on it and R 80 is almost finishing their basic design. Both program has been set as our future program and thus we cannot make any new joint project with another country. Together with KFX/IFX program and MALE UCAV, our hands are already full until at least 2026

I believe this new Korean plane is of different class and category and will not become a rival or redundant to our own plans... The Koreans are planning a jet powered military transport plane of at least similar size and capability to Hercules.. while our future plans are for medium to large sized civilian commuter turboprop planes (rivals to ATR etc)... I see no overlap there...

Joining the Koreans in this project (if possible) will give us practical experience in designing a larger (Hercules sized) plane with jet engines and also provide a "localized" alternative to Hercules for AU...
