South Africa has applied to the United Nations Security Council to sell missiles worth R1.5
billion to Iran.

The Rapport newspaper reported that this will be the biggest deal yet for Denel’s Umkhonto surface-to-air missile system.

The Umkhonto vertical launch surface-to-air missile was developed for the SA Navy’s Meko A200 class frigates, and has been in service since 2001.

The missile is high-velocity and infrared homing, providing defence against attacks from missiles and aircraft.

Although it is a surface-to-air missile, it is also capable of taking out stationary surface targets.

The Umkhonto was designed with a 23kg warhead for high-kill probability, unlike other missile systems in its class.

This news follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December 2016 between Iran and South Africa to boost defence and military cooperation.

According to the agreement, the countries will bolster cooperation in the fields of marine security and fighting organised crime.

Although Iran was removed from the United Nations’ list of countries to which no weapons can be provided, approval from the UN’s sanction committee is still needed for missile technology.

According to the Rapport, there is discomfort in political circles about South Africa’s plan to provide weapons to Iran.

How capable this system is compared to other similar systems like Aster-15, CAMM, CAMM-ER, Dk-10, Tor M2E etc.? Can it tackle supersonic CM threat?

PN seems also interested in this system.

This is defensive System and UNSC should have to give permission to South Africa ... if we can get production license , one of biggest obstacle on designing and making frigate will be solved ( air defense systems ) ...

that why that bastard said it can be used against surface target ( hell almost all air to air missile can be used as surface to surface missile )

There should be no approval needed for a sam system, iran didnt require any for the acquisition of the s300 because the arms embargo doesnt cover defensive systems like sams.To be perfectly honest the whole thing smells like utter bullsh!t to me frankly.

1. This is probably fake news.

2. They would not need UNSC approval as it is a defensive missile, similar to how the S-300 did not need UNSC approval.

3. Iran has numerous short-medium range missiles like the Tor, Buk, Crotale, 3rd Khordad, Ya Zahra, Sayyad 2 and many others and adding another type would be of little value.

this is sea base ... for frigate ... right now we don't have any air defense for our frigates ...

Strictly , according to UN resolution, there is a condition, missiles under 20 km range are allowed for export

The problem is, even if formally export is allowed zionist cancer would find a way for revenge against Denel in current stage, for such deal. Sadly, probably its unreasonable to deem such deal feasible, at the time being

BS news. Iran is producing long range missiles, you think they would import such a system? Who comes up with all these BS?

You do realise the systems like Taer and sayyad could be turned into naval systems, right and they're probably very close to being so if already have not.

U dont get it. This system is short range, thin and lightweight missile. Its vertically arranged in the launcher. Iran does not have missile with such properties

Are you high or something? go look at sayyad-3 and tell me what it looks like and that has a range of 200km. Iran could with ease make a shorter ranger missile . The issue is, have they given such a thing any priory i.e how much of a priority are sam's for navy.

That missile is NOT fit for arming patrol ships and corvettes. Have you seen big frigates and cruisers in iranian inventory ? And , Sayad 3 has , so far only has ground modification

For smaller ships, Unkhonto, is a must, as addition to CIWS. Small ship, many thin and light missiles

Stop wasting my time with this useless comments. If you can't apply basic logic then don't comment.
The sayyad-3 is a small missile that could, if they wanted be turned into a missile for naval systems. They had already talked of turning sayyad-2, so there is no reason why sayyad-3 could not be turned.

But, my original comment said, if they wanted, they would make an even smaller missile for their ships without much issue, but that depends on the priority. Maybe learn to read a little?

Thats purely you speculation, that a missile can be modified into missile for naval deployment easily

Furthermore, downscalling is required, probably different guiding and fuel. Russia has world most advanced AA technologies and finish Poliment Redut development for years. Technology modifications are no small patatoes. Sometimes buying foreign systems, can save time and money. But , sadly I dont think is realistic, such deal might occur now

Not just about missile , it's about guidance ....
These missiles are purely IR guidance with fire and forget ability .... So there is no need to add heavy radar to our frigate and worry about electricity , frigate balance , protecting crew from radar wave and etc ...

If we can buy them , we can use them as base for air to air purposes
