Unofficial source says Iraq in talks for C17’s, the same people were right earlier on T50’s and Apaches before official media got it so might be true.

Previous regime used IL 76 as strategic transport aircraft, currently only tactical transport is in service.

It's a very expensive tactic transporter. I hardly think Iraq can pay for it long as the partial Gov't in Kurdistan steals the money from the central. Not to mention the corrupted nature of many Iraqi politicians.

Well it's "legal stealing". Kurdistan basically gets a % of the budget considering its "part" of Iraq, but it takes more than it gives.

The transporter/s may be overhauled USAF one, which means they will be much cheaper than buying new built ones.

The Globemaster is relatively new. Only 220 have been built, and the US will sell nothing of what they operate.

Well it's only talk for now. There are many priorities than a heavy transporter. But it may be on the shopping list for the upcoming years.

C-130Js are enough

Yes, I agree but the previous regime had many IL 76. I don’t think they would be used that often anyway, at least not that needed for internal state logistics, maybe to other states for joint military training and such, paratroopers that’s all but they need a few strategic lifters, otherwise they simply lack the right equipment for logistics when needed, 2 C17 are probaby enough if they would buy them, but better the cheaper IL 76 or the new Chinese strategic lifter

I don't think so...how cheaper 200m each that is still a big price tag and is considered fly away cost not the entire life cycle costs.

You mentioned atleast 2 than it could be feasible a billion dollars is something Iraq can afford for a long term investment. I doubt China would ever sell Y-20 like strategic transport even after its gets into production line the reason is obvious US would want to look into it and I don't think current govt is in position to give any assurances to China not in the next 5-8 years.
