I don't belive there is a quota system within the Indian military. If there was why would the IA have ~15-20% of their soldiers/officers Sikh when they make up <2% of the population? I beleive it is purely merit based, as it should be.

Population of Sikhs in Punjab is 16 to 17 million & 19.2 million in India.

A reference was received from the State Government of Punjab appealing to the central government to do away with the population ratio-based quota system for recruitment in the Army as it had drastically decreased the number of youths from Punjab getting into the forces. However, the present recruitment system in the Army, based on the Recruitable Male Population (RMP) of each State, gives equitable opportunity to candidates from all States. Further, vacancies released to the state of Punjab, based on the RMP quota, are being fully utilized.

This information was given by Minister of Defence Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri SardarSukhdev Singh Dhindsa in Rajya Sabha today.

AFAIK Sikkim is a special case for obvious reasons. This is not to say Sikkim residents should be barred from serving in the IA- if they are up to the mark then good luck to them I say, they have the right to serve their nation just like anyone else.

Are you sure last time I was filling my forms for an Indian college they had a big list of reservation categories Freedom Fighter/Sports/OB/SC/ST/blah blah!.

ofcoures....i dont think sports,freedom fighters.obc,sc,st or even women comes under religion..s.c,s.t,o.b.c are a group of casts..recently supreme court also struck down the reservations provided to muslims by andhrapradesh legislature

It is not on the basis of what you are but on the basis of the job that you're supposed to be.

There's a big difference between quotas in civilian colleges and institutions and that of defense institutions.

Well the quota here refers to not more than X people from a certain state.It more like a cap and not reservation.

Are this just frontier guardsman that is not properly trained? if not, this is against modern military doctrine. If there ever is a rebellion, the whole unit can switch sides. That is why no major military has this kind of organization.

Did the little tidbit about the battalion being raised (by raised, trained and equipped) by the Indian Army escape your scrutiny?

Whom will we switch sides with? Sikkim Scouts will be a part of the Ministry of Defense and by extension the Army. If you didn't know, my people are some of the most aggressive Indian patriots in the country who are more attached to the land than some other states' people. This is a unique thing common with us and Arunachalis; we are secluded in our location but we've more Indianness in us than many other states.

This is simply because it is ingrained in us since childhood that if shyte hits the fan in eastern border, we will be the first one to face it so better to gear up rather than be sorry later.
