In this thread, I will post some song from around the world (mostly with video on youtube) about war veteran, they are either written/performed by veteran or for veteran. Some song are patriotic some are not, but either way, I will include my thought about the song from a combat vet point of view and why I am posting it on here

Without further ado, this is the first song

I just came back from a war by Darryl Worley

Lyric

The first thing I did when that plane finally landed was kiss the ground
The next thing I did was to go find my friends down at the old hangout
Drank some beer and talked a lot about old times
But when the booze finally hit Billy Joe Grimes
He said I don't know what it is, but you seem different to me

I said I just came back from a place where they hated me
and everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
If I'm not exactly the same good old boy that you ran around with before
I just came back from a war

The very next morning I took a walk through the neighborhood
I thought it's been so long since I've been in a place where everything is good
People laughing and children were playing
And as I watched em I found myself praying
Lord keep em safe here at home in the land of the free

'cause I just came back from a place where they hated me
And everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
If I'm not same little freckled face boy
That grew up in that house next door
I just came back from a war

I hope you cherish this sweet way of life
And I hope you know that it comes with a price

I just came back from a place where they hated me
And everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
Chances are I never will be the same
I really don't know anymore
I just came back from a war

I just came back from a war

[background]
You dont know me (repeated)

I just came back from a war

My Thought
The first time I hear this song on the radio is a bit after I was wounded in Afghanistan and being rotate back home, this song was complied around September 2006, which I would have been in country for about 4 to 5 months then, I don't generally listen to country song, but well, this one caught me.

The song is about soldier facing difficulty when they return home, coming from an absolutely chaos to a relative peace of a civilization, a vet need time to adjust. And that is what this song is about. Worley wrote this song after meeting a combat vet and talking about his experience in war and come back home.

What that's caught me is the similarity of what the song said and what I went thru both time I come back from a war. And the sadness one can see the different between fighting and dying and the ignorance that stayed back home.

When I first come back from war back in 2004, I did exactly what he sing, I kiss the ground when the plane landed and we were let out. I think to myself, no more combat patrol, no more people trying to kill me, no more heat, no more shitting on the side of the road, no more all these battle madness. I am back, baby.

But the first night I got back home, I started to look at America with a different light. People simply don't care about what you do over there, they are minding their own business. Watching and Binge on their TV show, going to the pub as usual, as if life happen with or without you, and they seems to don't know, or don't care what is going on over there, but one thing they do care is your awkwardness when you return from war. And they will come up to you and ask "What happened to you?" A few of my friend spot the difference

It was ingrained in this song with these 2 line

He said I don't know what it is, but you seem different to me

Another line of the song caught my eyes is the one that talked about the different and changes to a person in war.

I said I just came back from a place where they hated me and everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore

These line, echo what every other vet and what's on their mind.

The song itself is quite okay, there are a few patriotic ring to the tone about America, but overall, it is just about the veteran. That is why I think this song represent the mindset of a returning vet.
