Soldier, Wife of Officer Commits Suicide in Kashmir

Srinagar, March 8: An Indian soldier and wife of an army officer committed suicide in restive Kashmir.

Police sources said that Indian army soldier identified as Atul Kumar, posted with Army's 8 Rashtriya Rifles in his barrack in the mountainous Kishtwar area of Kashmir fired towards himself from his service (AK-47) rifle.

They said after hearing the gunshots, his colleagues rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The Indian army has ordered Court of Inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that wife of Indian army officer stationed in Rangreth, Srinagar committed suicide. The deceased was identified as Sangeeta Sharma, wife of Sunil Kumar Sharma Head Constable (No. 14617564). "The body of the deceased was recovered from the residential quarter," he said.

Nobody quite knows why Lt Col Jha pulled the trigger on himself - he had been serving in the military for the past 14 years. According to his mother, Lalita Jha, "there was no tension, no problems. I just can't understand why he did it".

He is far from the only soldier to take his own life this year - Capt Sunit Kohli, Maj Sobha Rani, Lt Sushmita Chatterjee... the list goes on.

In fact, the Indian army is losing more soldiers in these incidents than in action against the enemy.

^^There could be many reasons for the suicide - personal, professional, financial or some stress related issues. Suicide is a common phenomenon not just in military but also in civilians. Unless there is a specific reason, I don't understand what is there to debate on this particular suicide (where the reason is unknown) that the poster posted.

It's a common understanding that Military suicides usually revolve around guilt and regret. I won't go much into the details but I'm sure you're capable enough to understand the reasons.

A military of 1 Million+ troops has its problems. Nothing more, nothing less...if you think isolated incidents like this one changes the ground situation in Kashmir or any where else, you are delusional. The Indian Army has been involved in Kashmir counter-insurgency ops since 1989, they are battle-hardened. They are more than capable of coping with these incidents.
As far as long-term Kashmir solution goes, this has been discussed elsewhere.
This thread is sad and shows desperation on part of some who are in a state of total denial about the inferno raging right in their backyard.

The British army has a buddy buddy system for wherever they move and you look after your buddy make sure they are happy I am sure the Indian army has a similar plan of action this is just one of the few odd cases.

I would think , those figures are much less now. After 2006, militancy has almost died down in Kashmir and Indian army has not had a casuality in Siachen Glacier for some time now. As for suicides, I dont now, but does not seem like a major problem

As for Bangladesh, the biggest threat is from your fellow soldier
