They're extremely self-conscious people. They need to gain acceptance from others (especially the gora) for them to feel better about themselves. That's why they overreact to little things like this because deep down they feel hurt and anger is a way to express their dismay.
This attitude has been engrained in Indian DNA from the colonial days. Worship and obedience. Indians just need white acknowledgement. Once they don't get it they become disappointed and hostile. The old colonial hurt resurfaces.
The irony is that no matter how hard Indians try, they will always be looked upon as poor and dirty by their white counterparts. Some perceptions cannot be changed.
