Record 50 million mobile phones assembled​

ISLAMABAD: Chief Executive Officer, Engineering Development Board (EBD) Almas Hyder Saturday disclosed that first time in memory, a record number of over 50 million smart and feature mobile phones were assembled in Pakistan in one year.

Talking to media in Lahore, he said during the period under review, 22 millions smart mobile phones were assembled of which 99 percent sold so far in markets while 28 million feature mobile phones were pieced together of which 97 percent were purchased.

He said mobile phone parts valued $1.12 m were imported to Pakistan by the assemblers, according to a press release received here.

A total of 31 local and foreign mobile phone companies were awarded licenses of which 21 are operational while remaining are in process of setting up plants for production including Nokia.

He said only one foreign company imported 3.8 million feature phones during this period which is also now going to establish plant in Pakistan.

Almas Hyder said the best quality locally assembled smart and feature mobile phones equipped with ultra model technology has restored the confidence of buyers in Pakistan which he added is much cheaper and most economical than foreign assembled mobiles.

He said the moments mobile phones are assembled, they immediately absorbed in the market which speaks of good governance and transparent policy being pursued by the EDB for luring local and foreign investment in Pakistan.

He said Pakistan engineering industry has a large potential to grow and contribute a significant role towards national development for robust economic activities.

He expressed his commitment to strengthen engineering base by attracting foreign direct investment in this sector.

He said “we have one of the best liberal investment regime in the region coupled with plenty of natural resources and manpower”.

Almas Hyder said EDB is endeavoring to harmonize and align all standards to have a better and favorable business environment for all businesses in Pakistan especially foreign investors.

He said EDB is also making all out efforts to facilitate investors to materialize their commitments into reality with a focus to simplify the procedural hassle to maximum extent through various initiatives.

Local manufacturing plants have manufactured/assembled 18.14 million phones handsets during the first ten months – January to October 2022 – compared to 1.29 million commercially imported phones handsets, says Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled 1.44 million mobile phone handsets in October 2022.
The manufactured/assembled mobile phone handsets by local manufacturing plants during the calendar year 2021 stood at 24.66 million compared to 13.05 million in 2020 – a landmark increase of 88 percent. The commercial imports of mobile phone handsets stood at 10.26 million in 2021 compared to 24.51 million in 2020, revealed the official data of PTA.
The locally manufactured/assembled 18.14 million mobile phones handsets included 10.51 million 2G and 7.63 million smartphones.

Smartphones made by Chinese technology giant Huawei are expected to re-enter the Pakistani market soon, company officials have said.

Huawei’s executives in Pakistan told the media at a recent event that the re-launch was expected by the end of this year or by early 2024. The ceremony, organised to launch the company’s annual report for 2022, was aired in many countries, including Pakistan. The development comes as Huawei Chairman Eric Xu last week issued fighting words against US tech export restrictions on China.

ISLAMABAD: Local manufacturing plants have manufactured/ assembled 2.81 million mobile handsets during the first three months (January-March) of 2023 compared to 0.27 million imported commercially.

The official data suggests that local manufacturing plants have manufactured/ assembled 0.46 million mobile handsets during March 2023 compared to 0.08 million imported commercially.

Local manufacturing plants manufactured/ assembled 21.94 million mobile handsets during the calendar year 2022 compared to 24.66 million in 2021, i.e., registered a decline, attributable to issues in imports on account of restricting the opening of letters of credit (LCs).

Around 21.94 million mobile handsets were assembled during the calendar year 2022 - compared to 1.53 million commercially imported phones handsets, says the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The locally manufactured/ assembled 2.81 million mobile phones handsets included 2.24 million 2G and 0.67 million smartphones.

Besides, as per the PTA data, 56 per cent of mobile devices are smartphones, and 44 per cent are 2G on the Pakistan network.

The country imported mobile phones worth $ 462.701 million during the first nine months (July-March) of the current fiscal year 2022-23, registering a negative growth of 71.01 percent when compared to $ 1.596 billion during the same period of last year.

Pakistan’s mobile phone imports declined by 55.09 per cent on a month-on-month (MoM) basis in March 2023 and stood at $ 14.846 million compared to imports of $ 33.054 million in February 2023, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Mobile phone imports registered 91.93 percent negative growth on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in March 2023 when compared to $ 183.894 million in March 2022.

Pakistan locally manufactured 3.44 million phones in Jan-April 2023

ISLAMABAD- The locally manufactured or assembled mobile phones, primarily by Chinese companies, have surpassed the number of imported phones, coinciding with Pakistan's record-low foreign exchange reserves. In the first four months (Jan-April) of 2023, Pakistan manufactured or assembled 3.44 million phone sets locally, while the country commercially imported a mere 300,000 (0.3 million) phone sets.

According to official statistics from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), out of the 3.44 million locally assembled or manufactured phones, 2.79 million are feature phones (2G), and 0.65 million are smartphones.

Chinese mobile companies are leading the race in local manufacturing and assembly. Chinese phones not only offer affordability but also perform better than many high-end phones imported from abroad. According to the PTA, between January and April 2023, X Mobile from China manufactured 0.45 million mobile phones, followed by VGO Tel with 0.40 million sets. Similarly, Chinese companies ITEL, G'Five, and Infinix manufactured 0.39 million, 0.20 million, and 0.15 million phones, respectively.

Under the Mobile Device Manufacturing Authorizations program by the PTA, locally manufactured handsets from Pakistan have begun exports. In December 2022, at least 120,000 "Manufactured in Pakistan" mobile handsets were exported to the African market.

Between 2016 and 2020, Pakistan imported more mobile phones than those manufactured in the country. However, in 2021, for the first time, the number of phones manufactured in the country exceeded the number of imported phones, with 24.66 million phones locally assembled or manufactured compared to 10.26 million phones commercially imported. In 2022, the country assembled or manufactured 21.94 million phones, while the number of imported phones dropped to 1.53 million.

The idea is to promote ‘Made in Pakistan’ products and to create employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled labour. The company has already secured contracts the international brands which include itel, Tecno, TCL and Alcatel

The total covered area of factory is 150,000 sq/ ft. In the first phase, we have established 8 production, 2 Quality and 4 Packaging lines, with the technological assistance from TCL and Transsion Holdings Company.

The facility will have an estimated production capacity of 500,000-800,000 units ( per month) for smart phones and feature phones. Warehouse area is around 10,000 sq. ft. with height of 30 ft., equipped with latest material handling devices.
