Shillong: The Border Security Force (BSF) has been put on high alert along the India-Bangladesh border following twin blasts in Bangladesh`s Sylhet city, an official said on Sunday.

"Our troopers are on high alert along the India-Bangladesh after a series of blasts in Bangladesh," BSF Inspector General, Meghalaya frontier P.K. Dubey told IANS.

BSF officials have shared intelligence inputs with Meghalaya Police following the explosions, he added.

"We are not taking any chances with such activities and all necessary measures have been taken to prevent perpetrators from entering our side of the border," Dubey said.

The six dead in the two blasts on Saturday near a militant hideout in Sylhet includes two Bangladesh police officials. The blasts came a day after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a security checkpoint near the Dhaka airport in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

A Meghalaya Police official also said that they had also taken necessary measures.

"We have instructed our personnel posted close to the border to remain and to keep strict vigil in close coordination with the BSF," the official said.

India has a 1,880 km border with Bangladesh along four states -- Tripura (856 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), and Mizoram (318 km).

Rise in Infiltration

There are no inputs of infiltration on Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan border being visa free and friendly borders. No case of infiltration reported along Indo-China border. The number of cases of infiltration along Indo-Bangladesh, Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Myanmar borders during the years 2015 and 2016 is as follows:

Border/Year
2015
2016

Indo-Bangladesh Border
2
3

Indo-Pakistan Border
122
370

Indo-Myanmar Border
108
74

The Government has adopted a multipronged approach for security arrangements at the borders to curb smuggling and infiltration. The arrangements include deployment of Border Guarding Force (BGF), construction of border fence, construction of border roads, installation of floodlights, construction of Border Out Posts (BOPs), introduction of Hi-tech surveillance equipments, providing advanced weapons and Specialized Vehicles to Security Forces, action based on intelligence inputs etc.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to question by Shri Lal Sinh Vadodia in the Rajya Sabha today.

Repatriation of Pakistani and Bangladeshi Citizens

During the last three years i.e 2014, 2015 and 2016, more than 250 Pakistani nationals and 1750 Bangladeshi nationals were deported to their respective countries after due process of identification.

Illegal immigrants enter into the country without valid travel documents in clandestine and surreptitious means. There is no accurate data with regard to number of Bangladeshi citizens illegally residing in the country. Some Bangladeshi migrants may be prone to Islamic fundamentalism and become easy prey for militancy, communal conflicts, anti-India elements like Pak ISI etc. Besides, illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are found to be involved in cases relating to theft/burglary, smuggling, human trafficking and drugs trafficking etc.

The Government has been strengthening Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent infiltration of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Besides, bilateral mechanisms such as Joint Working Group on Security, Director General level talks between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Home Secretary level talks and Home Minister level consultations are in place between the two countries to address problems arising from illegal border crossing, transborder crimes like smuggling of drugs, Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), human trafficking etc. Further, deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants is also undertaken by the State Governments who have been delegated the power of detection and deportation of the illegal foreign migrants under the Foreigners Act.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to question by Shrimati Jaya Bachchan in the Rajya Sabha today.

The smart fence stretching about 700 km will have enhanced surveillance features with sensors integrated and also has better survivability

With infiltration across the Line of Control (LoC) on the rise, the Army is all set to accelerate work on installing a new smart fence to replace the existing border fence following successful trials.

The existing fence called the Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS) is located about 700m from the LoC. It is a double row fence consisting of concertina wire and was constructed between 2003 and 2005.

“The present fence has high rate of degradation due to snow and has to be repaired after every season which costs about ₹50-60 crore every year,” a senior officer told The Hindu.

In addition, he said that over time the infiltrators get used to the fence and have devised ways to cross it.

To overcome these, a proposal has been in the works for sometime to install a smart fence which will also enable round the clock real-time surveillance. This gained momentum after the Pathankot and Uri terror attacks last year in which terrorists crossed the LoC and attacked military installations.

The fence has already been tested and installed along a 50km stretch on a trial basis. The project would be implemented by the Army Corps of Engineers, the officer stated.

“The smart fence stretching about 700 km will have enhanced surveillance features with sensors integrated and also has better survivability,” the officer added but did not elaborate on the specifics due to sensitivity.

Infiltration across the LoC peaked last year in the aftermath of the surgical strikes by the Army on terror camps in September. Attacks on military installations have also gone up dramatically over the last two years. The border fence forms the first line of defence in the three tier counter-infiltration grid.

The new fence would be erected in place of the existing one and is expected to cost around ₹1000 crore. Army sources said that they have received in-principle approval for the project and have been assured on the allotment of required funds.

The project would be undertaken in phases. Under Phase-I, vulnerable areas and where most damage has occurred would be covered. Rest of the fence would be replaced in the second phase.

‘Invisible’ laser walls to bolster security along border with Pakistan in J-K
The Border Security Force will be bolstering its defences amid strained ties between the two countries and a rise in the number of infiltration bids and ceasefire violations.

The Border Security Force (BSF) is all set to get more teeth to man the 198 km India-Pakistan international border using a newly developed technology that can detect intrusions and relay information immediately to the nearest post for action.

Developed by Delhi-based defence IoT firm, CRON Systems, the made-in-India technology is called Kavach (KVx) series laser walls and is a notch higher than the existing laser walls.

“Laser walls, because of their beams, were visible. And the terrain and alignments (in the region) were a problem. We were looking for a wall that is invisible on the ground, cannot be felt, and is more effective,” said Rakesh Sharma, former inspector general of BSF’s Jammu Frontier.

“CRON Systems have come up with this intrusion detection system based on infrared array, which is invisible. It is more advanced than laser walls,” he said, adding that it can be used along the Jammu border with Pakistan which has 13 rivers and rivulets, besides unfenced marshy lands.

Kavach walls can also work in transparent water and glass, he said.

India shares nearly 3,000 km border with Pakistan, of which 198 km international border and 740 km Line of Control (LoC) falls in Jammu and Kashmir. Infiltration of Pakistani militants through this part has been a major issue for the BSF which guards the border.

Besides electric fencing, the force has tried using various technologies, including laser, to detect and prevent intrusions. Kavach walls are the latest in the series of developments undertaken by the force.

CRON Systems CEO Tushar Chhabra said BSF men use miCRON, a command and control platform, to manage the devices and monitor the border from their outpost.

The walls can immediately alert the nearest outpost about intrusion attempts and triggers action from a quick response tool (QRT), which is an internet of things (IoT) device.

“It monitors large swathes of any territory from a single interface. All devices on miCRON use CRONet, an encrypted network, to communicate with each other,” he said.

The all-terrain weather-proof system uses complex, encrypted technologies to monitor and communicate with the jawans. It massively improves troops’ visibility, patrolling and response capabilities, Sharma said.

On the installation, Chhabra said five KVx-series walls, connected with infrared (technology), can secure a kilometre-long stretch.

“It takes less than a couple of hours for a 1 km stretch to install the technology. All we need is electricity to run the technology. And in case power is snapped, it can be run on UPS for 8–12 hours,” he said.

BSF is currently pilot testing the Kavach walls along the Samba sector border on the Jammu Frontier, through which three heavily armed Pakistani militants had entered Indian territory on November 29 last year, and were shot dead by the BSF.

“CRON Systems has developed Kavach laser walls after working with our jawans on the ground and thoroughly understanding their needs and challenges. We are confident that it will be a force multiplier for us,” he said.

there is a fence there with other technologies in place at LOC but still they cry infiltration. hope they don't cry it after 2017.
but i think they would be crying about tunnels for face saving.

You don't spend billions of dollars just to save face, we are not that rich.
Do use your common sense.

I hope you realize that no matter what kind of tech is used, it is nigh impossible to prevent all and every infiltration attempt across a treacherously long and geographically complicated border. Ask Israel.
This new system won't be the be all and end all, it will just make the terrorist body count high enough for them to adopt another new measure and we will take another counter measure to prevent that, and so on and so forth.

Only time we will stop complaining is when "people" stop sending them.

This is just a cheap ploy of IA to make a chutya out of indian janta once again...whenever they induct or install something new...they say its a state of art system ...but the reality is they keep looking for pegions n dogs to put blame of espionage n train accidents.
What's most mind boggling thing here is indian janta always falls for this type of crap ...seriously that makes me wonder about the IQ level of common indian

What will happen if someone Cross this Laser walls??

and will India still blame Pakistan for cross border Terrorism even after installing Smart Fence and Laser walls ????

First thing , here the point is this that Indian Defense companies have already made smart fence and laser walls and this are part of Indian Space Mission.

Terrorism is indeed a big problem but Indian Establishment is aware how to finish off that problem.

Chinese advisors are there in Pakistan and thats why Indian Military planners have to do something to get rid of terrorism.

So now india must be able to control all the

So now india must be able to control all the alleged cross border activity....and if some thing happen or a pegion is caught ...that can only mean 2 possible things
1. India spent billions of $$$ on low quality equipment and your army is incapable of dealing with it
2. The equipment is fine, your army is doing a fine job, no one can cross it but if still something happens that means its fake and staged.
There is no other logical possibility .if u have some thing in mind please share
But don't blame Pak for everything that happens in your country from now on.
