Skipper Dhoni given Man of the Match award to boost his morale?

NEW DELHI: The decision to give MS Dhoni the Man of the Match award at Sunday's ODI against Pakistan surprised many watchers. Though the skipper had top-scored for India with 36, his wicket-keeping wasn't top-notch and he dropped the catch of his opposite number, Misbah-ul-Haq. Sources said Dhoni wasn't the frontrunner for the award but pipped others to the post at the last minute.

The MoM awardee is chosen by a jury of commentators. Sources said the commentators who voted for Dhoni claimed that the choice was unanimous. However, one former cricketer who voted in favour of Dhoni told TOI that Dhoni was given the award to boost his morale at a time when the time wasn't doing well.

The decision so surprised some commentators — who were not involved in the decision-making — that they questioned the rationale of giving the skipper a 'consolation prize' when others deserved it more.

For most who saw the game, the top contenders for the prize were Jadeja, who had chipped in with a useful 27, bowled an economical spell scalping the wicket of Umar Akmal as well taking a brilliant catch in the deep. He also fielded brilliantly throughout the game and could have claimed another wicket but for the dropped catch.

Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal was almost unplayable as he teased and toyed with the Indian batting to claim his career best ODI haul, five for 24. He was another contender. Medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar was also in the running for his magical opening spell.

According to sources, the Pakistan team unofficially complained to the commentators for not choosing opening batsman Nasir Jamshed as the MoM in the opening ODI match played in Chennai. Jamshed had scored a match-winning century but the award was given to Dhoni for his brilliant ton in a losing cause. The Pakistan team management felt the MoM should have gone to the winning team.

It was an aman ki asha series. You can except anything like this or even worst.

Enough of morale boosting ,, the players should learn from their own mistake and perform well without showing their attitude

Simple. Sponsors. Millions of dollars are hinged at this team. He has the majority of the money riding on his back.

PS: I really miss the days when Dravid, Lax, tendu, Dada were still playing :hitwall: These bunch of money chasing craps don't even deserve to lick the boots of those greats.

BCCI boss is the owner of Chennai Superkings which is captained by Dhoni and IPL is not far away.
Chennai needs a strong Dhoni to win.

Seriously, IPL has become bigger than national pride.

An all India National Conspiracy Theory ?

^ The above statistics is a good slap to all those who asked for Dhoni to be removed.

Actually there is a difference between CAPTAINCY and BATTING.

People who criticise his captaincy don't want himremoved from the team. HE IS OUR BEST ODI BATSMAN. (Not in tests though, but its a different matter). His captaincy is what people are criticising. His defensive mindset and lack of alternate plans ahave cost us many a times. A recent example was how he brought on Kohli when Pak was 15/2.

Nope, not All India Conspiracy.... just BCCI Conspiracy theory.

He has won the world cup for India, now even if we loose all the series till the next world cup under his captaincy , that's completely fine with me.

What can I say. Congrats buddy as even the selectors feel the same way.

As for others, can you even imagine an Aus/ Eng/ SA captain losing 10 matches and winning 1 against top 3 teams in tests still is the captain??

Frankly speaking, he does not even qualify to play test cricket.

I said in other threads, I will write here again.

India is playing too much cricket (including too many IPL matches), its not that Dhoni alone is faltering, the entire team is faltering.

Speaking about form, Sehwag should be kicked for ever from the team. This guy either is injured or if taken in team, does nothing, but in IPL, he suddenly becomes fit and starts smashing the opposition.

I repeat, Dhoni is the best captain we have, there is no absolutely no replacement.

I was reading the comments of wasim on geo. he said Ajmal was deserving the man of the mtach award for third one day but he had no option because all Indian commentator were suggesting the name of Dhoni

He also said that bowlers like Ajmal dont need such award to prove that they are among the best :)
