LONDON: The Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Dr Rowan Williams has said that the government of Pakistan’s decision to confer him with Sitara-e-Pakistan was recognition of the Pakistan’s appreciation for religious and cultural diversity and plurality of thoughts.

The Pakistan High Commission in London hosted a special investiture ceremony to present “Sitara-e-Pakistan” to the Archbishop of Canterbury. The award was presented on behalf of the President of Pakistan by Wajid Shamsul Hasan, High Commissioner for Pakistan.

Dr Williams was presented this award in “recognition of his services for the promotion of interfaith harmony and meritorious service to Pakistan”. The leader of the Church of England, who will soon retire but has been a great advocate of interfaith relations and spoke more favourably of Islam than probably any other Christian leader ever, said that he was deeply honoured to receive the award.

“It is real recognition of the willingness of Pakistani government to work for the protection of minorities and to honour the diversity of Pakistan, at the same time upholding its best traditions set by its founding fathers,” Dr Williams said.

Answering a question by The News, Dr Williams said the best the government of Pakistan can do is to make sure that “everyone has equal recourse to law”. And in events of extremist violence, “everyone must be confident that the govt protects their rights,” he said, adding that he remembered Benazir Bhutto and Salman Taseer as rare examples of those people who can sacrifice their lives for people of other communities.
