How close are Urdu and Arabic? The languages belong to two different family groups but the Urdu language contains many Arabic originating words which entered Urdu via Persian changing the pronunciation. In this episode, Meena, an Arabic speaker from Iraq, and Ayesha, an Urdu speaker from Pakistan, challenge each other with a list of words and sentences.
Modern Standard Urdu is a Persianized and standardised register language of the Hindustani language. It is the official national language and lingua franca of Pakistan.
