Siachen Glacier is a deadly warfare zone where soldiers not only lose their life in non-combat situations but lose their limbs too just to stay at their icy posts. In 2012, a massive avalanche in lower Siachen killed 130 Pakistani soldiers at one go, till now hundreds of Pakistani Soldiers have lost their lives since 1984.
Non Combat deaths and causalities are mostly due to :
1.Extreme Temperatures:
Winter temperatures drop to minus 70 degrees Celsius with blizzards gusting at speeds of 160 kilometres per hour.
2. Avalanches
Avalanche is a mass of snow, ice, and rocks falling rapidly down a mountainside. Snowstorms and rainstorms are important contributors to avalanche danger. Heavy snowfall will cause instability in the existing snowpack, both because of the additional weight and because the new snow has insufficient time to bond to underlying snow layers.
3. Frost Bite:
Frost Bite is an injury that is caused by exposure of parts of the body to the cold. The cold causes freezing on skin and underlying tissues. Fingers, toes and feet are most commonly affected.
A lot of Pakistan Frost bitten soldiers are disabled for life. Many disabled soldiers get clerical jobs in GHQ or in Askari related Organisations.
4. Crevasse
A crevasse is a deep crack, or fracture, found in an ice sheet or glacier. Crevasses form as a result of the movement and resulting stress associated with the shear stress generated when two semi-rigid pieces above a plastic substrate have different rates of movement.
In order ro combat this problem, Soldiers move with a long common rope tied to their gear so anyone who falls can be rescued instantly.
FiberGlass Igloo (the soldier's living quarters):
The living quarters of soldiers on Siachen. Such are the conditions in which soldiers spend their daily lives in Siachen Sector.
Its obvious that under such hazardous conditions, soldiers can get affected physically and psychologically. so a new type of soldier is Proposed.
