SHOCKING: Govt Awards Medal To Naval Commander For Serving Jaitley’s Family, Constructing Beauty Parlour
Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) is an award that officers of the Tri-Services wear with pride. It is awarded in recognition of their “distinguished service” to the nation, not sycophancy. However, some recent awards have sullied the reputation of the armed forces and have raised questions over the criterion adopted to shortlist awardees.
A recent example is that of Commander Sanjay Singh (name changed) who has been awarded the VSM for frivolous and undeserving activities such as creating ladies’ beauty parlour, men’s salon, kids’ play zone and a golf practice zone at the Naval Officers’ Mess in Delhi, and for making comfortable the stay of two successive Defence Ministers—Arun Jaitley and Manohar Parrikar, reports the New Indian Express.
Commander Singh looks after the mess and was awarded the VSM for 2016. The officer’s citation, which lists his achievements and the reasons for the award, says the officer played a role in helping to construct infrastructure facilities such as indoor badminton courts, a solar water heater, a souvenir shop and walking track “in record time of two years”. The citation lists these as the ‘highlights’ of the officer’s “meticulous planning, dedication and hard work”.
Selection of distinguished service awards is done by a committee, which is then approved by the office of the Navy Chief.
The contribution of the officer, which actually clinched the award for him, is listed in the last para of the citation.
The citation reads: “The stay of the present Hon’ble Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, with his family, for more than a month in September ’14 and that of the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Manohar Parrikar, with staff, since 24 November ’14 are a testimony to the officer’s hard work to achieve the best standards of hygiene, habitability and décor commensurate to the best standards of the Indian Navy (sic).”
Interestingly, the awards had stroked a controversy when the Army gave away over 50 such awards at this year’s Republic Day to top generals posted in Delhi. The Army soon faced the heat as the only contribution of these generals was to move files from one desk to another.
When contacted by the TNIE, the Navy officials refused to comment on the issue.
