Shiv Sena threatens Pak on Champions Trophy

A right-wing Hindu group has threatened to prevent Pakistan from playing in India in the Champions Trophy tournament scheduled to start this week, officials said on Wednesday.
The Shiv Sena, said the step was to protest against July's bombings of trains in Mumbai that killed 186 people.

"How can they allow Pakistan to play matches in our country when the Mumbai police have evidence of its (Pakistan's) involvement in the July 11 terror attack?" Shiv Sena Executive President Udhav Thackeray said on Wednesday.

Mumbai police chief AN Roy on Saturday publicly accused Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), of orchestrating the attacks on trains that also wounded 800.

Thackeray did not elaborate on the Shiv Sena's plans to hold up the Champions Trophy, an International Cricket Council's biennial event to be played at four venues, including Mumbai, which will host the November 5 final.

Pakistan, one of the 10 participating countries, will fly to Mumbai only if they reached the final.

Two of their three league matches are in the northern city of Mohali and the third in Jaipur. The semi-finals will also be held in Mohali and Jaipur.

Maharashtra authorities said it will not allow any disruptions if Pakistan reach the final.

"Right now it is a hypothetical question but we are duty-bound to maintain law and order in the state," Maharashtra Home Secretary AP Sinha said.

"We have the warning but I will not issue comments on the remarks of a political leader," said Sinha, who is in-charge of the state's internal security.

Indian home ministry officials in New Delhi said Shiv Sena's threat has been passed to Jaipur and Mohali.

"Stadiums in these cities will be sanitised and extra security will be provided in view of this development," a senior ministry official said.

Shiv Sena dug up the pitch in New Delhi's Ferozeshah Kotla ground in 1999, eight years after damaging the ground of Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium to protest the Pakistani cricket team's presence in India.

Sena vows to dig up Mohali pitch if Pak allowed to play

Press Trust of India

New Delhi, October 8, 2006

The Shiv Sena on Sunday threatened it would dig up the cricket pitch in Mohali to protest against Pakistan cricket team playing in India in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.

In a statement in New Delhi on Sunday, Sena's northern India incharge and Delhi unit president Jai Bhagwan Goyal said the party would not allow Pakistan to play in the country after the disclosures made recently by the Mumbai Police Commissioner about ISI's involvement in the July 7, Mumbai serial blast.

"At a time when Pakistani Ambassador to the US had admitted that Islamabad supported terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and continued to give financial and military assistance including training to the terrorists, how can we talk friendship and sporting links?" Goyal asked.

The Sena alleged the 17 Pakistani citizens who had come to watch cricket had gone missing and were even involved in the terrorist attack at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore hence demanded the government to forthwith cancel the Pakistan-New Zealand match on October 25 at Mohali.

"Otherwise our activists in Punjab and Haryana would be forced to go to any extent to stop the Pakistanis from playing on Indian soil," the Sena warned.

Ban match involving Pak in Mumbai: Thackeray

Press Trust of India

Mumbai, October 15, 2006
Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Sunday called for a boycott of any cricket match in Mumbai involving Pakistan, saying such a move would serve as condemnation of terror activities sponsored by Islamabad.
In a hard-hitting article in the Sena's mouthpiece Saamna, he said, "We have been saying for years now that there should not be any cricket match between Pakistan and India. We are also cricket lovers but not at the cost of our national pride."

The Pakistani team is in India to take part in the 10-nation Champions Trophy, the finals of which will be played in Mumbai.

Citing the July 11 train bombings in Mumbai in which nearly 200 persons were killed, Thackeray asked, "How will the country progress if we are not even able to demonstrate our condemnation of Pakistan's terrorist activity by boycotting cricket match with it?"

On the heightened security around the stadium in Mumbai to prevent Shiv Sena members from disturbing the match or digging up the pitch, he asked, "Why so much effort to protect our enemies?"

Around 150 Shiv Sena activists have reached Jaipur, where Pakistan are to play their lung-opener against qualfiers Sri Lanka on October 17, Sena's North India Pramukh Jaybhagwan Goyal said.

He said that the Shiv Sena members would hold street protests here on October 16 and 17.He said the activists could go 'up to any extreme' to stop the Pakistani cricketers from playing.
