Haldia: An Estonian ship with 800 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate, which is used in making explosives, has been seized at Haldia port in West Bengal by the Coast Guard on Wednesday.

Coast Guard and CID officials are investigating the case and questioning all the 24 crew members. Significantly all the crew members on board the ship are Pakistanis.

A team from Intelligence Bureau has also reached the port and is trying to find out why such huge quantities of explosives were sent to West Bengal.

Authorities found out about the Ammonium Nitrate only after the ship unloaded its entire cargo.

The ship was anchored about one-and-a-half km off the dock since November 1. It is still not known whether the ship had a permit to import such huge quantities of Ammonium Nitrate.

The ship had been issued a license to import fertilizer.

Ammonium Nitrate???????? so it can be called explosive in true sense ??

The chemical compound ammonium nitrate, the nitrate of ammonia with the chemical formula NH4NO3, is a white crystalline solid at room temperature and standard pressure. It is commonly used in agriculture as a high-nitrogen fertilizer, and it has also been used as an oxidizing agent in explosives, including improvised explosive devices.

So there is a possibility of using it as an explosive.....

India produces a huge quantity of Ammonium Nitrate....and exports it to other countries...so why would the same compound be imported ...thats the key area to look into.

Though it may be just an alert ...nothing else.

Yes the same ammonium nitrate that Pakistan govt seized bag full made by Vaghai Industries, which you at the time claimed of Indian consipracy to support the terrorists for bomb making materials.

So, if two bags were caught in Pakistan, it is Indian attempt to help terrorists and if a ship full with mostly Pakistani sailors are caught with same thing, the motive got to be something else.

Personally speaking, I think there wont be any link to terrorism, but I am surprised at the double talk of some members.

Do you not this already, criteria depends on on whom the criteria is applied. This world is fare for sure.

Well, they had a license for fertilizer shipping so maybe the nitrate may have something to do with it.

Ship with explosive cargo seized at Haldia port

First of all it is an Estonian Ship, not a Pakistani ship, Pakistani members working on it is no big issue as this happens all around the world, they have either mix crews or a full crew from one country. Issue is the ship owner should be traced and asked from where the ship came and who had loaded to shipment and from where it came.

First they say it is used in making explosives and later they say they don't know if it had a permit to bring such huge quantity of explosives ?? Hope the reported or the authorities know they difference but the contradiction seems to be made as a deliberate attempt to make this an issue, mirch masala kind of news item.

It is was an attempt to smuggle explosives, i wonder what was the ship doing for one full month anchored one and a half KM away from the port, before it was unloaded. Does explosive smuggling done in such a manner that it is unloaded at the Indian official port, where it will go checking by Indian authorities customs & intelligence agencies, so much official paper work has to be done before something is let go of the port and the item is not a small quantity but 800KG.

Where was the Indian coast guard for one month when the ship anchored in its waters ?? Nobody went to the ship or any communication done with it that who are you guys, what are you carrying ?? That is very strange. I believe for smuggling such material, its not done through official Indian ports rather through illegal ways, the way we use to see in Indian/English movies when drugs or such material is offloaded not through ports.

This story i believe is just made up to sensationalize an issue because it involves something related to Pakistan and an item which is used in explosives.

Or either they are the stupidest of the smugglers to anchor for one month with such a cargo and then unloaded it on an Indian port where hundreds of Indian authorities are present to check it up.

Anyway a very lame story trying best to implicate Pakistan but unfortunately strings don't connect.
