Stresses need to get rid of 'cycle of election-year violence'

Wendy R Sherman, US under secretary of state for political affairs, has cancelled her meeting with opposition leader Khaleda Zia.

The US top official, who arrived here on Sunday to attend the second US-Bangladesh Partnership Dialogue, was scheduled to meet Khaleda Monday afternoon.

Asked about the meeting cancellation, Kelly S McCarthy, press and information officer at the US embassy in Dhaka, told The Daily Star that the Under Secretary had regretted that a hartal marked the first day of the partnership dialogue, and subsequent schedule changes precluded her call on with the chairperson.

Sherman herself explained the reason at a joint press conference at State Guest House Meghna.

“My schedule required me to make some changes…I met with the opposition leader last time I was in Dhaka.”

Talking to reporters after addressing the partnership dialogue at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel later in the day, the Under Secretary said: “I was rather surprised when I arrived yesterday, a hartal was underway.”

In her remarks at the partnership dialogue, Sherman pointed out Bangladesh’s success in different sectors.

She however cautioned that the ultimate success of the country’s story is not guaranteed.

“My colleagues and I, along with a great many Bangladeshis, have watched with dismay as the streets of Dhaka have been shut down by hartal after hartal, by angry demonstration after angry demonstration.”

She continued: “I cannot presume to tell the people of Bangladesh or your leaders what issues demand attention, what wrongs must be righted, or what approach your country must take as it faces the grave challenges of the future. In Bangladesh, as in any democracy, this is for the people alone to decide.”

She expressed her worry that about series of shutdowns.

“…I worry about a cycle of violence that shuts down a city of millions on what seems like a daily basis, that dramatically slows Bangladesh’s economic growth, that feeds a political culture that rejects compromise, that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that radicalises segments of the population.”

“To truly prosper, Bangladesh must free itself of this long-standing cycle of election-year violence.”

Is not the US State Department informed about why there has been a series of shutdowns in Bangladesh? Do they not know that more than 300 people have been killed in the last four months from police, BDR and RAB shootings? Are they unaware that thousands of opposition activists and organizers have been abducted and murdered in the last four years? What exactly does the US Embassy do in Bangladesh?

.
Basically nothing that helps BD it seems.they're here to look out for their interest and keep an eye on you know whom.

This is just a result of tit for tat. Repeated the history. She is becoming friendless, is this the proof ??

In March, Khaleda Zia had cancelled her scheduled appointment to meet visitng Indian president Pranab Mukherjee hours before it was due.

The appointment was scheduled for Mar 3 but the Jamaat-e-Islami had called for a strike on that day and the BNP chairperson cited "secuity issues" to call off the meeting.

The Indian president did not go public but is said to have not taken kindly to the perceived slight.

The hartal appeared unexpected.

Ugh...why do people still commit to hartal? It is an outdated colonial-era approach. Under such conditions, hartals won't help solve anything. They should understand that.

. . .
This is good thing that US undersecretary canceled her meeting with KZ because now KZ should realize that those around her advising on hoax that US going to support a caretaker govt. This should make it even clear that only way to throw out genocidal regime and meet peoples demand is through street action.

There are overwhelming evidance of genocide, political killings, wholesale imprisonment of opposition and shutting down media and torturing editor and yet US under secretary finds strike to be inconvenient? That is sheer mockery to human rights, democracy and secularism from top of gun barrel.

US has long history of supporting autocratic and genocidal regime and Bangladesh is just latest of its example.

By the way 18 party alliance called for strike on Wed to protest ongoing genocidal and oppression by Awami League.

When genocidal regime does not even let people express their dissent, hartal is one of the way (may not be the best) to demand change. The question "why do people still commit to hartal" is rather naive and urban elitist type query who are too cozy in the comfort zone and care less to sacrifice for greater good. (This is not directed specifically to you but to many urban elites).

Hartal alone can not solve the core issue but hartal along with massive movement can bring the change.

I understand.

I do hope one day this county can be free from hartals, and general people can have more democratic mobility. Guess that'll only happen after Bangladesh politically matures more.

You may understand but you do not agree. Caretaker govt was vital tool for democratic maturity Awami Leaue has destroyed that and now on its way to set up one party subservient indian rule over Bangladesh.

1.It was unfortunate that the meeting could not take place. However, it needs to be understood that BNP was not prepared to call off the strike as a condition to meeting an Under Secy.

2. Pranab's case was tit for tat as well as a call to BAL's foul play. Pranab had dragged feet in meeting Khaleda at Delhi to please his niece Hasina. Sonia just refused to meet her.

3. Why did Pranab have to come knowing well that things were not normal at Dhaka? He came as per agenda of his niece. Hasina had thought Khaleda would meet Pranab who would try and cool her down. Not so easy.

.
It sounds like this low life under secretary Wendy Sherman had an AGENDA. She definitely sounds PRO AWAMI LEAGUE supporter. Bangladesh people should send her A$$ packing back to Washington DC.

She claims it is not for her to decide yet that is precisely what she is doing. She is interfering in the internal politics of Bangladesh and picking sides.
