You should see the video for the reaction of the people. I disagree that such things (gender discrimination) happens in families...atleast not in cities. Though rural areas still have a long way to go.

I have never seen any mother or as a matter of fact any human giving such verbal and practical preference to a boy over a girl even if one has prejudice of that sort. For a mother both girl and boy are loved the same way as both are part of her own very body. My question basically is does it actually happens around there in India that what was depicted in the video. From me the answer is NO. If its NO then its the most pathetic video or documentary i have ever seen. If answer is Yes then i would rather just keep silent as i would still not believe it actually happens out there.

this is indeed a encouraging sign of change in a place like uttar pradesh that is rife with "honor killings", thug culture and a generally oppressive and reactionary environment... it was a uncomfortable watching for me as the script was quite real in the context of traditional indian culture.

in the first shoot, it was good that the mother-actress made the provocative question in context of hindu traditions about would a daughter set fire to the funeral pyre in the final rites... it was even better that the opposite lady replied with "why not??" and her husband supported her.

the second shoot had the younger lady being more vocal and non-calm but that would be because of her youth but one must applaud her that she is not all about school/college exams.

however, i would desist from using this as a indication of enlightened india because quite a few states have a reduced number of females because of female foeticide and female infanticide to the extent that haryana, punjab and possibly rajasthan don't have much females for local males to marry and are having to do with seeking/buying/smuggling brides from other states ( as far as kerala[1] ) and even other countries[2].

the statement in the second shoot had the real mother and daughter saying that they feed leftover food to dogs and that is a unfortunate statement because one of the many wrong things caused by presence of dogs in india is their use in disposing of aborted female foetuses... this happens in "maha rashtra" state ( and most probably in other states too ) which is said to be the worst state in gender ratio, and in 2010 came to light the case of at least one doctor, a dr. sudam munde, and his wife, keeping five dogs and feeding them with illegally aborted female human foetuses[3]... that is not disgusting, this is insane !!

then there is the aspect of malnutrition in much of india, especially among female infants and adolescents, and this is certainly not helped by the ridiculous "health and wellness" industry promoting the ridiculous idea of size-zero females as the ideal form of beauty.

while the vid you posted indicates a hugely welcome change, but we must recognize that it is a very slow change that cannot practically keep up with the chaos and daily changing life in india, so as i always say, indian society can only be changed in entirety by hard socialism... only that will bring harmony and gentleness.

and one more stupid thing in india is the concept first propagated on doordarshan channel years ago of calling the daughter as "beta" ( son ) supposedly to create awareness of female rights... but when the daughter is not accorded her status as female and called "beti" ( daughter ) how can india accord a place to its female citizens??

then how do you explain "honor killings" of females the india, pakistan and afghanistan where the mother participates in the murder of her daughter?? this[4] is a case from delhi from last year...

She learned that her parents had fixed her marriage to someone from their caste in Alwar. The wedding was set for November 22.
She reportedly had an argument with her parents where she reasoned that she was legally married and could not marry again.

Her parents, Jagmohan and Savitri Yadav, reportedly told the police that she threatened to drag them to court, which angered the parents.

Sources revealed it was Bhawna’s mother who took the lead in beating up her daughter, insisting they should “end the matter”. She then strangulated her daughter to death, while the father held her by the feet.

Singh said, “I got a call from her father around 3.30 am on Sunday morning. He said a snake had bit Bhawna. They reached here by 6.30 am and we took them straight to a local baba. He checked her pulse and told us that she was long dead.”

sure, this murdered lady was more sensible than most and wanted to file a court case against her parents for oppressing her but the general uneducated social environment helped her parents murder her... neither the constitution of india came of help to the murdered lady nor any magical environment created by india's numerous schools and colleges ( because education here is generally not meant to liberate oneself and the society but is more geared for jobs - wage-slavery ).

you see, the south asian traditional family system is a untrustworthy, oppressive and fickle system where relations are generally decided by capitalist/reactionary socio-economic factors... a most primitive system we have and not just females but males have a most difficult time.

In our part of world Mothers are the ones begging for mercy and safety for their daughters in such cases. Not sure about India or Afghanistan. But yes exceptions are always there.
