Shaukat Aziz for resolution of Kashmir, Palestine issues
Calls for eliminating trust deficit between Pakistan and India

Brussels—Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz has stressed the need for resolution of the Kashmir and Palestine issues as part of efforts to curb extremism and terrorism and promote world peace.

He was addressing as chief guest and key note speaker at the Havard University Club’s annual dinner here. He spoke on the ‘Challenges and Opportunities facing South Asia’. His focus was on Pakistan, |India, Afghanistan and Iran.

Shaukat Aziz said, the challenges the world is facing include the global financial crisis, threat of extremism and terrorism, lack of dispute resolution, which includes Kashmir and Palestine, and absence of strong leadership to resolve global issues.

During his extensive remarks, he emphasised the need for the solution of the long-standing Kashmir dispute in line with the wishes of the Kashmiri people. He stressed peace between India and Pakistan as essential for ensuring progress and prosperity in the region and highlighted the need for eliminating the trust deficit between the two countries.

Emphasising that Pakistan itself was a victim of terrorism, has always been committed to opposing this menace and was working to minimise and resolve the root causes which resulted in a feeling of deprivation.

Responding to a question, he appreciated the role of the ISI and strongly stated that it is a professional organization trained to fight extremism and protecting national security and interests.

He said demonising ISI was unfair and unjust, and “we are all aware how many different intelligence agencies in the region are actively playing their role and pursuing their countries interests”.

Referring to the global financial crisis, he said this was the result of inflated asset values caused by excessive lending, poor risk management, inadequate supervision by senior management, Boards, and regulators, as well as greed and arrogance on part of various state holders.

Touching on the political situation in Pakistan he said a democratically elected coalition Government is functioning in the country, which through good governance and transparency should meet the challenges facing the community, and aspirations of the people at large. He urged participants to support Pakistan and provide enhanced market access for the Pakistani products in the EU.

The event was largely attended by the elite of Belgium society, which included the Deputy Prime Minister, Ministers, leading businessmen, parliamentarians and academics from all over Belgium.

It was a rare opportunity for Pakistan to be represented on this forum. During his visit to Belgium Aziz had meetings with leading politicians, MEPs, members of the Pakistani and Kashmiri community as well as NGO’s and think tank forums.

Aziz was optimistic about the future of Pakistani politics and stressed that the current democratic process in the country must be respected and encouraged to flourish for the future generations of that country.
