I don't think it's necessary. Shaolin shall keep as it shall. But since shaolin monastery is more and more commercialised. It might got to do with head of Shaolin trying to curry favour with the authority.

Exactly. Nationalizing religion is significant to protect the society from foreign meddling. Interactions cannot be stopped, but whatever is taking in must be altered according to the cultural codes of China.

I think places of worship often display national flag in Mainland China.

In the past, Shaolin temple was always royal property.(Actually most famous temples in China are royal property.) Emperor was the temple's benefactor.
