Officials on the ground told Express they were facing serious problems in the distribution of relief materials amid fresh incidents of stone pelting by separatists in Bemina locality of Srinagar. “We could not distribute relief materials in Bemina as the separatists blocked the approach road. They also pelted stones at relief workers, demanding that they first use suction pumps to clear the water from the area,” an official said.
Malik and his gang were learnt to have disrupted another rescue attempt near Budshah Chowk on Tuesday. They later hijacked an NDRF boat to distribute relief materials in hotels near Lal Chowk and Budshah Chowk. Leader of the Hurriyat’s moderate faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq too has warned the Army against distribution of relief materials. A banner reportedly put up by his men outside the Jama Masjid in Srinagar read, “Indian Army helped Indian citizens in Kashmir and not Kashmiris. Don’t need Indian rescue and relief.”
Despite the roadblocks created by the separatists, Army and NDRF teams have intensified the relief operation in several flood-affected localities and relief camps.
At least 73.6 tonnes of relief material has been distributed by the NDRF so far, while around 3,887 tonnes have been airdropped by the Indian Air Force. Officials, however, admitted that the State government has not been able to streamline the ration distribution in several localities.
