Shaheed Abdul Hamid: Dhamupur village remembers its war hero
VARANASI: The natives of Dhamupur village, the birthplace of 1965 Indo-Pak war hero of the 4 Grenadiers of the Indian Army Shaheed Abdul Hamid in Ghazipur district, remembered the brave son of the soil on the occasion of his martyrdom day on Saturday.
Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid, who smashed the reputation of the invincible Paten Tanks during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, sacrificed his life in Khem Karan sector on September 10 at the age of 32. He was honoured with the highest war time gallantry medal, Param Vir Chakra, posthumously. During war, Hamid was commanding a recoilless gun detachment. Seeing the gravity of the situation, he moved out to a flank with his gun mounted on a jeep and destroyed many tanks before sacrificing his life.
A programme was organised at the village park to mark the occasion. The chairman of All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) Maninderjeet Singh Bitta attended the programme and gifted a memento to Rasoolan Bibi, the septuagenarian widow of Abdul Hamid. Addressing the function, Bitta spoke about the bravery and courage shown by Abdul Hamid during war. He also unveiled a bust of the hero on the occasion.
In his memory, a Shaheed Smarak was dedicated in April 1999 in the village, situated about 30-km from the district headquarters on Ghazipur-Jalalabad Road. The citation of the Paramveer Chakra was inscribed on a plaque fixed on the memorial. The ancestral house of this brave grenadier is situated at the walking distance from the memorial.

Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid (July 1, 1933 - September 10, 1965) was a soldier in the 4 Grenadiers, Indian Army, who died in the Khem Karan sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, and was the posthumous recipient of the Republic of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra. The award was announced on 16 September 1965, less than a week after the battle that cost his life.
He was born in a Darzi family at Dhamupur village of Ghazipur District of Uttar Pradesh on July 1, 1933, the son of Mohammad Usman , who was also a wrestler. He was enrolled in the 4 Grenadiers on 27 December 1954
He had destroyed 7 pakistani army tanks.
