Airline apology to Indian leader
America's Continental Airlines has apologised to former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam for frisking him before he boarded a flight to the US.
The airline said in a statement that it had not intended to offend Mr Kalam or the sentiments of the people of India.
Members of India's parliament were outraged after it emerged that Mr Kalam had been frisked and made to remove his shoes at Delhi airport in April.
Protocol exempts former presidents and other dignitaries from such searches.
'Honoured'
"We have tendered a formal apology to Mr Kalam and we sincerely hope he will fly with us again," news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted from a statement issued by the Continental Airlines.
"Our intention was never to offend Mr Kalam or the sentiments of the people of India. Continental Airlines takes great pride and is honoured to have flown a respectable leader such as Mr Kalam," the statement added.
On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the airline had said the search was a "normal security procedure" and that no one was exempt from security checks.
Angry Indian MPs described Mr Kalam's frisking as an "outrageous incident".
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told parliament that airlines are given a list of people who are exempt from security checks at Indian airports.
"This act of frisking the former president... is absolutely unpardonable and beyond the scope of the laws of our country," Mr Patel said.
"We will look into the matter. If the former president has been insulted, we will take action."
According to reports, Mr Kalam, president from 2002 to 2007, was made to remove his shoes and empty out the contents of his pockets, and a hand-held metal detector was run over his body.
News of the incident - which took place in April as he boarded a Continental Airlines flight to the US - only emerged this week.

Well I am all for thorough questioning but it should be meaningful, particularly when the American embassies overseas that have issued the visa have gone through formalities as well.
The visa issued at a US embassy grants you the right to get on a plane and present yourself to an immigration officer. Permission to enter and the duration of stay is at the discretion of the US immigration officer.
I'm sorry to hear that so many of you have unpleasant memories of coming to the United States. A lot has changed since 911, but once you enter and meet real Americans you will see that we are decent human beings.

Why should anyone be exempt from security checks?

Yeah I agree with you. I consider myself to be lucky because I have been frisked only once in 4 years while traveling :P Then again, I try to avoid taking flights for this reason. I prefer to take the bus for travel :agree:

But that one time when I was frisked, it was very humiliating :frown:
They made me go into a separate line and everybody was like staring at me. It was really embarrassing

But I completely understand why they do it so I can't hate them. They are just making their country safe.

Agreed. I think Indians and Pakistanis should not mind the security check.

The only thing we need to put in place the same strict security check for the Americans at Indian and Pakistani airports.

Yup, It would make an interesting news : Bill CLinton Strip Searched at New Delhi / Karchi Airport. Humourists and cartoonist will defenitely rave about it for atleast six months. But I dont think India or Pakistan have the balls to do that. To really add more spice we can recruit people which hardly are proficient in english and the scene rally will become enjoyable. having a haryanvi / UP cop questioning US citizens.

I have also been questioned for around 3 hours and yes all they ask are really stupid questions and they repeat the same questions again and again. It really annoys and irritates to repeat youself while you are feeling insecure and exploited at the same time. Hold onto your nerves because a single burst of anger can relly ignite the situation and you feel like strangling that fellow.

I will not generalize about all americans but a racial undercurrent does flow unless you are in a subcontinent neighbourhood. Or maybe I just happen to look like a terrorist.

Isnt it obvious, especially if you travel to or have contact with what the Americans like to call Rednecks  / Hillbillies and so on. To these guys, all sanwla colored people are Muzlimz and Trrsts  :P :bunny:

Well you don't have to feel sorry about it. the only unpleasant part for me was immigration, other than that it was an excellent trip.

I have grown up with many Americans kids in Saudi and personally think that most Americans are one of the most open-minded and friendly people . Then there are exceptions amongst everyone.

Hopefully Americans can understand that the same applies with other people as well :)
