severe earthquake jolts california major cities

Pakistani village folk live in risky rammed-earth or rock-wall (generally structurally unstable) settlements which give way to destruction too easily during shakers. Plus there are rock slides in Mountain areas as well. That is why you have that sort of casualty rate. Plus civil defense and first-responder activity may take weeks in remote areas.

Sorry for the off-topic segway.

The difference between 7.0 and 8.0 are several magnitudes higher in the richter scale.
Clearly you know nothing about pakistani architecture then. Just like all Pakistanis are evil punjabis, eh?
My house made of steal beams, cement and bricks shook like it was made of sticks that day and we weren't even located anywhere near the affected zone.
the 2005 quake in pakistan led to the loss of 100,000 lives
You exaggeratee that number by 20 thousand. Also located in a valley where landslides and other catastrophes occured you comparing Kashmir to California is like comparing Antarctica to the Sahara. Go read an atlas before you throw up everywhere on the fourm.

the toll on the pakistani side was 87,000. i assume people died in Indian side of the valley. i could not get the figures

california is as unstable as the himalayas. the pacific plate is drifting from the north american plate. a good chunk of california will be in the pacific ocean 10 million years from now.

California does not have the same geographic features as Kashmir, it's not the same even if it "unstable" and you clearly say Pakistan lost 100,000. 2 lies, eh?

Au contraire ma soeur....

Take a gander at this and tell me how I'm wrong....it might be stone, or more commonly, rammed earth in some areas where bricks were/are unavailable, or these days, simply brick. A world of difference from our evergreen Bangladesh, I must say. You either never got out to villages in Pakistan or have no idea even from pictures.

This is an older mud hut, we had plenty of these in Bangladesh in the past too, these are death traps in an earthquake.

This is a village brick structure in Kohat in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa where you are from apparently (these types whether brick, stone or mud are usually covered in mud for a better appearance).

This is a stone structure (a Village School) in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa. Earthquake risk? I'd say yes.

Some houses are better finished in some areas and are quite idyllic, but still significantly risky in an earthquake.

Some people are trying to revive mud-built houses in Pakistan (hopefully in non-earthquake-prone areas).

I think I have made my point.

Heh heh, we have so many experts here at PDF. :rolleyes1:

Just add water, instant experts.

for the record I am not a geologist. I have visited some of the places in this book - couple of them with a geology professor

Well we're overdue in LA for at least an 8.0 shaker (the big one everyone keeps talking about)....here is the map from the USGS, the red spots and streaks are shakers that have already happened....

the rockies are not in california :-)
height of the mountains is not the criteria for seismic activity :argh::argh::argh:

Nice interesting book. Gotta get it at some point.

the book is an interesting one. but to visit some of the places in the book with a geology professor was an eye opener

California is home to secret societies(and their wide ranging evil practices), **** industries, pioneers of homosexuality. You name it. They've got it.

Hence all the natural catastrophes.

Looks pretty recent to me.

Look - if it has been proven that you don't know a lot, then it is better to stop digging holes (American proverb).

And you can't really dig yourself OUT of A HOLE. Save yourself further embarrassment...

California is home to one-third of US population and is the seventh largest GLOBAL economy. There is a lot more to it.

Don't show the world any further how little you know. Reporting your post as a troll-bait thread hijack comment.

You are NOT Allah and are not the decider of calamities and catastrophes.

In coming time many severe earthquakes will jolt various countries and large no of people will be killed as there is alot of evil in this world these days

.
So only focus on Calipornia and ignore the rest of continental USA???
