Serbia Sold 282 Modernized T-55 Tanks To Pakistan – Report

BELGRADE – The Ministry of Defence of Serbia sold 282 T-55 tanks to Pakistan Army, which were from the arsenal marked as an obsolete equipment, Serbian Daily ‘Blic’ reported.

The deal was agreed at the Arms Fair in Belgrade, and the contract of purchase, worth tens of millions of dollars, will be signed next week. A source from the Army told the daily that this contract is very important for the Serbian Army.

“The tanks, which had to be sold as obsolete equipment, will be modernized and sold to Pakistanis. Modernization will increase T-55 value many times. The deal was made in great secrecy because it is a contract worth tens of millions of dollars. An agreement in principle was reached in person with Pakistani Minister of Defense Industry,” said the source.

‘Blic’ findings were indirectly confirmed by the Chief of the Defence Technology in the Ministry of Defence, Major General Bojan Zrnic.

“It is true that there was an agreement in principle for the sale of 282 tanks from the arsenal of retired and obsolete military equipment, but I do not want to talk about with which country and the army this deal was made. It would not be appropriate because the contract has not been signed. What can I say is that the offer is extremely favorable for the Army of Serbia as the tanks will not be sold in its current state, they will be modernized first. This task will be entrusted to our defense industry,” says General Zrnic.

He added that the money from the deal will go into the budget for new weapons.

"Modernized" would be a misnomer. They are upgraded and we do not know what components to which degree. I think night-vision would be one of the upgrades and if possible, a remotely controlled gun can be added - if it is mean to be used against terrorists.

I assume there was a thread on the same topic last week

Seems fishy deal for old guys.

Why acquire 50 year old Tanks,
Over past 5 Years India have retired, 468 T-72 Tanks inducted before year 1984.
Remaining 1950 T-72s which have received MLU, will start retiring in Year 2021

Probably meant for anti-terrorist operations. Different logic would apply, you would not need or want to risk more expensive tanks when these cheap ones are available in good numbers & can do the job.

Posted a week back.... Still no contract signed.... PA won't buy them... We already have bucket load of HIT build Type-59 series... 600 of those upgraded to AZ status (and many even sold to african and other countries).... And given to FC....

The only Serbian weapons Pak is interested are LAZAR II and Nora SPG which are under evaluation (under going tests in PAK) as we speak... Meanwhile Sindh Police had ordered Lazars long back.

AZs were given to FC along with old Type-59s and T-60 series., nobody is going to buy another type of upgraded T-55s when we are already phasing them out.

Possible. I was going by the assumption that the story carried merit.

To test there capabilities in true battle involvements, to make an impression out of these and try to sell in export market. Remember how we try to to debate if the system we are buying is war proven or not, THIS WAR, would have given a perfect certificate that could have been cashed in export market.
I frankly have no idea what the ministry was thinking buying these junks, i seriously STILL doubt this! do not make any sense.

Why would Pakistan buy 50 year old designed tank. No matter how updated, it is essentially a 1950’s design. HIT is updating T-59’s which is in essence Chinese version of T-54/55 series tank. Are we saying that Serbian updated T-55’s are better than Al-Zarrar?

There is an old saying in Persian

“Peer peer hast agarcheh sheer hast”

It means old is old even if it is a lion. IMHO accuracy of this report is doubtful.

HI,
iI heard from a reliable source that the tanks will specialise in mine clearance and IDE'S in north west Pakistan against the Taliban. india's 150MM gun will easily take care of the T-55 in combat so there are not being used against india. the new mbt-3000 or al Haider tank will be india specific but this will be introduced on the al- khalifs have been build.

False report. We wanted to test the Nora b52 howitzer that's all. Same reason why coas is in SA
When it comes to SA are we looking for SP Artillery or Towed one. As for this report it seem to be true
