Serbia & China vow to boost defense cooperation

Serbian President Boris Tadic and visiting Vice Chairman Xu Caihou of China's Central Military Commission agreed here to promote bilateral cooperation in defense and other areas.

During their meeting, Tadic told Xu that Serbia regards its relationship with China as an important pillar of its foreign policy and is willing to deepen mutual trust and expand cooperation in various realms.

Calling defense and military cooperation an integral part of the Serbia-China strategic partnership, the president said that his country is ready to work with China and explore new ways to beef up collaboration in this area.

Meanwhile, Tadic added that Serbia adheres to the one-China policy and appreciates the increasingly influential role of China in international affairs.

Xu, for his part, lauded the traditional friendship between the two nations, noting that the 2009 establishment of the China-Serbia strategic partnership raised the bilateral relations to new levels.

Beijing respects Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the social system and development path it chooses according to its own national conditions, Xu said.

China, he added, appreciates Serbia's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its unwavering support for Beijing on issues concerning China's core interests, and is ready to carry out joint efforts with Serbia to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields.

On Friday, Xu met Serbian Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. The two agreed that their countries should boost bilateral military cooperation and thus carry forward overall relations.

The senior Chinese military official arrived here Thursday from Bulgaria for an official visit. He will leave Sunday for Croatia, the last leg of his three-nation Europe tour.
