MULTAN: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Saturday said that a separate South Punjab province along with its secretariat will be established this year.

Speaking to the media in Multan, Qureshi said that a separate Public Service Commission will also be established for the proposed province. “We have sought support from the opposition for the creation of Southern Punjab province,” he said.

The foreign minister added that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf government believes in the rule of law.

Regarding National Accountability Bureau’s recent crackdown against politicians, Qureshi said that all of the accountability watchdogs’ cases were filed during the tenure of previous governments.

Qureshi continued that politics of confrontation is not the government’s policy and that they are just implementing the decisions of courts. “Prime Minister Imran Khan believes in the supremacy of law and he even appeared in the unjustified helicopter case.”

Forming separate South Punjab province not easy: President Alvi

Responding to a question regarding the economy, FM Qureshi said Saudi Arabia, UAE and China are cooperating with Pakistan for the revival of the economy due to the sincere efforts and effective foreign policy.

He further said a delegation of Malaysian investors including Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad will visit Pakistan on January 23.

PM Imran will visit Qatar on January 22 to further solidify bilateral relations between the two countries, he added. "Qatar has announced to provide one hundred thousand jobs to Pakistani people," Qureshi said.

Good news. Alhamdulilah.

it is the need of the time but how would resources would be divided with out creating trouble? i heard that north punjab does not have enough resources to survive . is it true?

Maybe the South Punjab province should be named Multan province.

Why not South Punjab province?

We need to modify the 18th amendment so it doesn't become federal vs province. Province should be given some rights but not to go against Federal government.

North Punjab is pretty self-sufficient; it's the agricultural and manufacturing hub of Pakistan. It's main concern is energy production for which it relies on other provinces for.

What would the population split between the new province and remaining one look like approximately?

@Zibago @Cookie Monster @Signalian

All colored part is punjab. The red Part is the proposed “junibi punjab”. Current population of Punjab is 110+ million. The proposed Junubi punjab will have abpopulation ranging between 45 million to 55 million. (Depends on the districts allocation to each part.)

What about Hazara soobah?
Not a problem for pti as pti will just get more majority in Senate if that happens :D

Area wise it would be 50-50 but in terms of population its more or less 65-35 but the real magic happens in the political divide north punjab has a pmln majority while south has a clear pti majority

The Punjab province is huge with ~70% of Pakistani population residing there. It's a terrible mess when it comes to managing all those people and areas, and not to forget the people in south are aften overlooked as the provincial government sits in the north. Even people have to travel several hundred miles to the provincial captial to get their official stuff done.

We need smaller management blocks, to equally distribute resources across all the population.
