Seoul wants Dhaka to get defense equipment from Korea

There's nothing you can teach me about military might apart from bloodshed and instability. It's a completely bogus argument that military power ensures economic security. Especially in the subcontinent context. You're not a powerhouse. No one is powerhouse in the subcontinent region. At best, this region contains massive amounts of poor people that require immediate attention. Focus on trade and education instead of arming your nations to the teeth with weapons.
sure i can .... tell me world history , not so much . just from 1500 A.D. till now

I think you have to build up your arms as long as your neighbors also do, because without doing so you leave yourself exposed. Economic growth of a country means it comes into the focus of other countries and this is when military might is a good thing. The Burmese border is very easy to manage as it's not a massive border. Just build a firm, iron cast defense in the way of an impenetratable border. It's India I am more worried about.

Nothing to be proud of if you ask me. A waste of resources. In fact, an outrage. I know, I know... You'll say that this equipment is needed for this and that. I say NO to that. Developing nations such as BD, India and Pakistan need to invest in their people rather than warmongering. Yes, every last penny. Sounds simplistic and full of cliches? It's the truth.

Bless you...may there be many more like you...but the sad reality is - guys like you are a minority.

What you says sounds logical but is bordering being naive. The friction between south asian nations is a product of complicated issues evolving over hundreds of years and there's no light at the end of the tunnel that suggests that we are any closer to resolving them.

The differences are fundamental to the local psyche and cannot be wished away with a morally upright tone and declarations of peace and prosperity. For instance, to be able to comment on PDF, one would have to be well versed with the english language and would require access to internet. Hence, indicating that most members here are educated and affluent / prosperous (in relative terms). Yet despite achieving these, one can always find a putrid mass of hate and disgust here.

In such a scenario, one can ill-afford a Utopian outlook. On the contrary, the simmering tensions require the countries to arm themselves, sufficiently, to dither any adventurism. The trust deficit means that it is illogical, potentially suicidal, to survive on one's neighbor's good graces.

Cheers

South Korea said Bangladesh can consider Korea as a possible source for procuring training and combat aircraft and high-tech defense hardware to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.

The issue came up for discussions at the second Bangladesh–South Korea Foreign Office Consultations held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Korea in Seoul on Wednesday, according to a message received here on Thursday.

On defence cooperation, the Korean side apprised about their expertise in manufacturing training or combat aircraft and high-tech defence hardware, and expressed the hope that Bangladesh would consider Korea as a source of procurement of such items.

Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque led the Bangladesh delegation, while the Korean team was led by its First Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Ambassador CHO Taeyong.

Both sides emphasised having regular high-level visits at political level to bolster the existing bilateral relationship of strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Bangladesh side urged the Korean side to consider establishing direct air connectivity between Dhaka and Seoul.

The meeting discussed the whole breadth of Bangladesh-Korea bilateral relations, including the existing bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and economy, human resource development and employment, health, climate change, agriculture, civil aviation, and defence, and other important issues such as post-2015 development goals and regional cooperation, including Saarc multimodal connectivity.

The meeting expressed satisfaction at the growing bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Korea while highlighting the issue of the balance of bilateral trade that is heavily in favour of South Korea.

At present, the bilateral trade volume stands at $1.7 billion. The Korean side identified the import of industrial components and raw materials by Korean companies operating in Bangladesh as a major reason for the imbalance and assured of putting in more efforts to narrow the gap.

Both sides also acknowledged that there were huge untapped potentials that need to be harnessed to improve the current level of trade.

The Foreign Secretary apprised his Korean counterpart about the possibility of importing pharmaceutical products, ceramics, more jute and jute products from Bangladesh.

While stressing the need for increased investment in the country, then Bangladesh side requested for Korean support in infrastructural improvement including road and rail connectivity. They also agreed on mutual cooperation to mitigate the effects of climate change.

About Bangladeshis nationals working in South Korea, the Korean side informed that they had already increased the quota for Bangladeshi workers in Korea to 4,600 a year from this year (2014).

While acknowledging that the Employment Permit System (EPS) model is working well, the Bangladesh side requested for employing Bangladeshi seafarers in the RoK ships.

The Vice Minister appreciated the Bangladesh proposal and assured the Foreign Secretary of their due consideration to this matter.

The Foreign Secretary also thanked the Korean side for extending cooperation in the area of health management, including arrangement for training of Bangladeshi nurses, invited them to the 3rd FOC to be held in Dhaka in 2015.

Bangladesh ka bhao to dekho.:rofl:

Most of the defense budget is spent on millions of men in army and other security agencies and import of weapons in case of India usually followed by ToT and assembly in India. So i wouldn't call India's defense budged a luxury, infact it generates millions of jobs.

If Bangladesh can have thriving shipbuilding and Pharmaceutical industries, both of which require a good deal of technical expertise, why not try to develop our own weapons. This would create jobs, build weapons within required parameters, instead of having to splash out billions of dollars on second rate weapon technology that countries selling have moved on from.

Because than we would need the government to fund a research and development sector, and they probably can't do that considering how much the facilities and products and services cost. But considering how starts up are going, I think it could work well with external investment. All we need to show is smart, intelligible and hardworking people with god work ethics and we've surely got the lot.

if bd can acquire k-9 thunder from s.k. it will be a great addition to ba. I love its mrsi system.
