ISLAMABAD (Online) – The senate standing committee on defence and defence production has said that recommendations for buying submarines cannot be forwarded to the government due to economic crunch in the country.
The committee which met in parliament house here on Friday under the chair of Senator Lt Gen (r) Javid Ashraf Qazi, observed that due to economic crisis in Pakistan, recommendations for issuing funds to the Pakistan Navy (PN) for buying submarines was not possible.
The in-camera meeting of the committee also stressed need for preferring local products as far as purchase for defence purposes is concerned.
Earlier the standing committee was briefed about the purchase of the equipments and machinery for the armed forces. Briefing the committee on its ongoing and new schemes for the Navy, the concerned official said the fourth frigate, which was produced domestically, would be handed over to the PN in June.
The committee was also informed that production of Fast Missile Carrier Crafts (FMCC) was also in process. Talking to the media after the meeting, Qazi said the PN was instructed to plan its schemes in view of its needs for next 25 years.
