ISLAMABAD: An amendment to clause 203 of the Elections Bill 2017, barring a disqualified person from heading a political party, was approved by the Senate on Monday.

The Elections Bill 2017’s clause 203 pertains to membership of political parties, which allows every citizen to have the right to form or be a member or office-bearer of a political party, despite the person being out of the service of Pakistan.

However, the amendment tabled in the Senate suggests that a person who is not eligible to become a member of the Parliament cannot head a political party.

The government opposed the amended bill with Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid expressing reservations.

However, the bill was passed with a clear majority of 49, including leaders from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, voting in favour of the amendment.

Earlier in the Senate, on October 11, a resolution was passed on the same matter.

The resolution was presented by Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, stating that a person who is not eligible to become a member of the Parliament or has been disqualified cannot lead any political party.

The step was taken against the approval given to ousted premierNawaz Sharif to head the ruling party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, after amendments were made to the Elections Bill, 2017.

Folks, this is a victory on the scale of the Panama decision, the Shareef dynasty is at witts end it seems.

Senate alone cant amend the laws, they need approval of National assembly where Na Ahl's party have majority.
I thought the bill goes to the senate for approval......

. .
It may to be a new "dramabazi" by PPP so that people of Pakistan think that PPP is doing some opposition. Why did the senate pass the last amendment that allowed NS to become/stay the head of the party?

sab game hey... PPP and PMLN is ONE!

Its all topi drama, a sort of damage control effort from PPP but i am afraid its too late.

This is nothing. The bill is an ACT not after NA passed it. Senate have passed this new bill or disqualified the old one but that is of no judicial importance as the NA will NEVER approve it (since PMLN have majority there).
