Sorry, I disagree. The war was far from over. Japan was prepared to fight to the last man and bullet if Allies aka US decides to invade their home islands. Americans found out the hard way in islands like Iwo Jima how doggedly the Japanese defended their territory. Snipers sitting on top of coconut trees for days just to take out a single US soldier before being taken out by US counterfire , needs some serious dedication. So the Americans concluded that if Americans invaded Japan it will cost thousands if not millions of US lives and by that time US public was getting war wearing and wanted to end the war as soon as possible.

US tried every means possible, including fire bombing which resulted in far more deaths than Hiroshima or Nagasaki, but Japan showed no signs of surrendering. Curtis Le May, the then chief of USAF even noted that if US lost the war he could be tried as a war criminal for the extensive damage his airforce done to Japanese civilians. So as a last resort US dropped the nuclear bomb. Even after that Japanese Govt was hell bent on continuing the war. Finally the emperor intervened and Japan surrendered.

Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombs may killed thousands but it saved millions of American as well as Japanese lives. It avoided the final showdown b/n US & Japan. Its easy for us to sit in peacetime and comment , but that was a different time and a different war where casualities was numbered in thousands per day.So I believe the US commanders chose the lesser evil. Also Japan seems to have no problem with US, they why the hell should we bother about.

Uggh stop your tripe! John Howard and his party was more than willing to sell uranium to India. They lost the election and the Labour party came in with Kevin Rudd at the helm of things. Labour parties policy is clear, won't sell uranium to non NPT signatory. And all that stuff about Mandarin speaking slave blah blah blah, yes Kevin Rudd did speak Mandarin and worked as a diplomat in China for a while. Doesn't make him a Chinese stooge though, you should dig out the Wikileaks about his concerns regarding China.
