KHAR: Security forces claimed recapturing strategic Lowi Sam, stronghold of Taliban, and killing 13 militants in fresh fighting in volatile Bajaur region on Tuesday.
According to military sources the troops retook Lowi Sam after stiff resistance from the Taliban fighters and started digging trenches and setting up bunkers to strengthen position. They said the troops also made advancement to adjoining areas of Nawagai to the west and Charmang to the north-west.
Officials said ten suspected militants were killed and six sustained injuries after the jet fighters and helicopter gunships pounded hideouts in Chinar, Charmang, Kohee, Babra and Hashim areas of Nawagai sub-division.
The troops also claimed destroying the militant locations in Zower Bandar and Lowi Sam with artillery shelling, sources said, adding: Three militants were killed and four other were wounded in the shelling.
The forces have abandoned the strategic Lowi Sam, some 15 kilometers from Khar, regional headquarter of Bajaur, after several days of fierce fighting started on August 6 with the Taliban militants.
The fall of Lowi Sam to security forces may weaken the hold of militants in the tribal region and boosted the moral of the fighting troops and local people, a military official said.
The troops faced strong resistance from the militants in Tang Khata, Rashakai, Khazana and other areas where militants have established tunnels, the sources said, adding it took a long time of the security forces to dismantle the tunnels.
Meanwhile, the tribal force (Laskar) of Salarzai tribesmen would resume their action against Taliban militants hiding in Salarzai region from Wednesday. The decision was taken at grand jirga which met in Pashat area on Tuesday.
The jirga was attended by elders and ulema of all tribes of the Salarzai region including former member National Assembly Shahabuddin Khan, Malak Fazl Karim Khan, Malak Muhammad Younus, and Malak Nasir Khan.
The jirga unanimously decided to torch and dismantle houses of twenty four militants in Banda, and Ghundai areas of Salarzai area on Wednesday.
The jirga also decided to impose fine of rupees twenty lakh and expel from the area those people who were found having links or harboring Taliban militants in future.
