SEA, a Cohort plc company, is to upgrade the Combat System Highway (CSH) infrastructure onboard the Chilean Navy's three former UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigates Almirante Cochrane (ex-HMS Norfolk ), Almirante Condell (ex-HMS Marlborough ), and Almirante Lynch (ex-HMS Grafton ).

The work, beginning in December 2016, is intended to lay the foundations for the forthcoming upgrade of the ships' combat management system (CMS), surveillance radar, and anti-air guided weapon system.

The CSH is a high-integrity local area network that provides robust and reliable digital data exchange to enable mission-critical systems - such as the CMS, radar, weapon, and sonar systems - to communicate in a reliable and deterministic manner. The original CSH was developed in the late 1980s by what was J&S Marine, a company now subsumed into SEA.

According to SEA, the CSH upgrade will introduce new open architecture system interfaces using standard Ethernet format, together with a new combat system performance monitoring capability. The latter is hosted on user-friendly touchscreen technology and provides clear graphical visualisation of the combat system data exchange activity.

A new remote display capability is also being provided, enabling distribution of the information to new locations onboard. In addition, a new data logging capability will provide for much improved offline system performance analysis.

The CSH upgrade programme, due to be completed in early 2017, will be carried out while the frigates are at Valparaiso naval base. The first upgrade will be carried out by SEA personnel, the second ship fit will see Chilean Navy personnel working alongside a SEA team, whereas work on the third vessel will be handled by the Chileans alone. All equipment will be supplied by SEA.
