Scramble makes mincemeat of MiGs

On this day in 1999, IAF scrambled two MiG-21s in response to a threat of air violation by the PAF.

In August 1999, Indian .Pakistan hostilities were at a peak, a PN Atlantique aircraft had been shot down by India and the tension on the borders was described as at at knife edge. There were constant air patrols, each side was monitoring the other around the clock resulting in aircraft being constantly scrambled. One of these resulted in two IAF MiG-21s being scrambled from an airfield in Indian occupied Kashmir, in the heat of the moment, while baring down the runway, No 2 MiG got caught in the leaders slipstream and began losing control and it's pilot proceeded to eject, the Indian air controller watching panicked and gave the call for eject without referring to No2, the MiG leader who was by this time airborne assumed that the call is for him so he also promptly proceeded to eject.
Whether an air violation by the PAF materialized on that day or not but it certainly caused the IAF the loss of two aircraft....some sources describe it as the cheapest kill of the conflict.

ATC called out for him to eject. No1 in the formation responded to the wrong call and ejected Flying Officer G S Dhindsar

keep your BS to yourself, after your airforce cowardly attacked the unarmed PN aircraft, i guess you assume all was normal and it was your PM which first asked Bill Clinton to get involved else as it's a fact Pakistan had Indians by the throat.

the war ended on July 4th. If you are sore about IAF downing of Atlantique you are justified. I would be mad if the PAF shot down Indian navy patrol aircraft. To be fair I am surprised IAF shot down the Atlantique. Pakistani army was not going to start another war with all the dressing down they got from the entire world

I don't understand what are you blabbering about, if you can't comprehend the topic then no need to reply....if the situation wasn't tense then the IAF wouldn't have needed to go on a hot scramble and end up losing both aircraft due to stupidity of the Air controller.

Well i doubt they were exactly having a feast on the border.
Even on the LAC, where a single bullet hasn't been fired, the situation is described as very tense , what to say of LOC where a conflict had just ended and hostilities are never far.

I read Dawn and Frontier Post articles in 1999. There are a lot of finger pointing in Pakistani media on what went wrong. I do not expect Pakistani army to start another war especially when they had to get a fall guy for the war that just ended.

Yes there are also articles in Indian newspapers questioning about certain peaks still under Pakistani control and not forgetting the Kargil Coffin scandal.
