Scomi keen to construct Dhaka-Chittagong monorail

Foreign company keen on monorail

Friday, July 8, 2011

Scomi International, a Malaysia-India joint venture expressed its interest in building a monorail between Dhaka and Chittagong, which will offer people faster means of transport and eventually ease traffic congestion on the country's main highway, connecting the capital with the prime port city.

Representatives of the joint venture, Scomi International, expressed the interest during a meeting with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith held at the finance ministry on July 7. General Manager of the company Sayed Hussain led his colleagues to the meeting.

Following the meeting, the finance minister told reporters that the firm was advised to submit a formal proposal to the government for consideration. At the meeting, Muhith said, the representatives of the company gave an idea that the monorail could be built on the existing Dhaka-Chittagong Highway without acquiring crop land and removing nearby houses and other structures for the purpose.

He said the company is now constructing a 26-kilometre long monorail in the Indian city of mumbai at a cost of Rupees 120 crore for every kilometre. The finance minister said the proposed monorail on Dhaka-Chittagong route could be built under the public-private partnership (PPP) project.

The monorail, once in operation, can carry 80,000 commuters on either way every hour. The maximum speed limit of the rail will be 90 kilometre an hour when the minimum 32 kilometre. -BSS

Scomi is a Malaysian company
and the work done in Mumbai as mentioned
is being constructed by a joint venture between
Malaysia-India. I wonder if the proposal was from
that joint venture accumulation or from Scomi Malaysia.

They can form a pact with AM group, Orion group, BCL etc
so that local specialists can engage.

You got to be kidding me:cheesy:

Monorail is intra city mode of transportation. Very unsuitable for the sort of traffic and distance between Dhaka and Chittagong.

While a monorail is not intercity in its true sense, but it is worth waiting.

Who knows, it may work out!

However, I will add I am not an engineer or know much about the engineering problems involved!

Well the proposal is made by Scomi International which is a joint venture, although Scomi is still the major share holder.

We already have a rail track in Dhaka-Chittagong road and the overhead monorail wont be competitive to the existing rail which runs as fast as 100KM/Hr.

Its a stupid idea.

^Life is full of adventure, you just
have to look into the details!

Guess thats the only free ride people get
during Eid ignoring how dangerous it is.
But seems thousands enjoy this path who
has come to the city far away from their village.

Of course it does look a little too overcrowded, but I think it is quite common to see such sights (of course, not so overcrowded) all over the subcontinent!

I am sure there are many reasons why such overcrowding happens and why they somehow cannot be controlled even if one has the desire.

It looks like these are chaps going to or from a political rally or else why is the chap on top carrying the National Flag?

The author misquoted the company. They actually want to build a monorail in Dhaka and in chittagong. In Dhaka the first route will follow airport road to the south of the city

That makes more sense. Monorail is mostly for transport within cities, not long range between cities.

No you are WRONG. The Daily star writters are clueless and never fact checks the articles.

A Malaysian global service provider Thursday proposed to the government to build monorail in the capital to reduce sufferings of the city dwellers from nagging traffic jams, officials said.

monorail from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the city suburbs

Malaysian co wants to build monorail in city

Actually Fan is right, saw it on another news paper,
there are two separate proposals one in Cthg another in Dhaka.
Somehow the news got mixed up in the process.

Think about it if there was indeed a monorail in Highway
why do we need trains? Or why not bullet trains.

I think it really does not matter.

What is commendable is that a monorail system is being installed.

It will be a great help.

Even though Kuala Lumpur roads are comparably decongested, it is faster and more convenient to use the monorail.
