The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental mutual security organization which was founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. SCO Observers India, Pakistan, Iran, Mongolia. Guest Attendance ASEAN Group.
Russia’s and China’s interest to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has considerably increased lately, which can be easily explained. For Russia and China the SCO means an opportunity to retain its influence in the region, and to block the western influence there. Russia and China is working on strengthening the SCO, so as to turn it into a serious regional military organization.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is emerging as a player in Central Asia and Asia Joint military exercises by its members and its role in balancing Russian and Chinese interests in the region have grabbed Western attention. While much international interest has focused on the nature of security cooperation within the SCO, Western analysts remain divided on the political significance of this relatively little known organization, which is enhancing regional cooperation across a variety of military, political, economic and social issues.
SCO concluded joint military exercises, dubbed “Peace Mission 2007.” It’s also of interest to note that Pakistan, Iran, India, Mongolia have applied to be members of the SCO, for now they just have observer status. And with Russia resuming long range patrols with nuclear capable bombers, something they suspended over a decade ago. There is no doubt that the resurgence Russian and Chinese military power and the SCO is at least on some level a response to NATO militarism and expansionism. Putin was even explicit that the Russian resumption of bomber flights was in response to “other states” who did not demilitarize after the end of the cold war, an obvious reference to NATO and US its ever expanding military budget and military global presence.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which maintained it had no plans for expansion, is now changing course. Mongolia, Iran, India and Pakistan, which previously had observer status, will become full members. SCO would be expanding into South Asia and the Gulf region, while "bypassing" Afghanistan. NATO contingents in Afghanistan would shortly be "surrounded" by SCO member countries. NATO would face a dilemma.
SCO has a habitation and a name in Central Asia, Asia and the Gulf. NATO would then be hard pressed to explain the reason of its expansion into the territories of the former Soviet Union.
Important issue – Analysts now suggesting that any attack on Iran could spark a much more severe global war than initially thought. The specter of the war spilling into the entire Central Asia, Asia and Gulf regions now a possibility. Asian countries get a large amount of their oil from Iran so would be very displeased if such an attack were to take place. Iran was invited to join SCO. SCO will protect Iran if any military action taken to attack Iran. SCO have a strong mutual defense pact. SCO’s article 5 seems that these nations have begun promising much closer military defense in the event of attacks from outside agents. Therefore any attack on Iran could see Shanghai Cooperation Organization come to Iran’s defense. Asian countries will support SCO because SCO attached to Asia.
Shanghai Cooperation Organization holds regular joint military drills each year but this year will see numerous large scale war games with Russia, China and its allies majority of Asian will participate as Guest attendance (ASEAN Group).
SCO is already a very powerful alliance Russia and China are quietly forming a power bloc with more population than the west, vast energy and mineral reserves, and an economy that’s growing at a wild pace.
SCO confirmed new members – Pakistan, Iran, India, and Mongolia. SCO interested countries - Majority of Asian Countries interested to join SCO, Venezuela, Cuba, Libya, Syria and African union may join SCO because they oppose western countries. SCO will be the sole viable global security arbiter in the 21st century. Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will emerge as a global military and economic alliance.
Will SCO warns NATO? Comments welcome

NATO is always towards western countries, Its a good time for those countries to join SCO who are not happy with the NATO behaviour.

All utter nonsense I’m happy to inform you. NATO & SCO are conducting direct talks at all levels and have been since the SCO was formed. In addition there are even moves to extend certain joint exercises.

And further to that the final word still and always will rest with the Permanent 5 on matters pertaining to Total Global Security. These ancient allies might have their contests as is their want from time to time, but push comes to shove - there really is only one side.

Well though SCO came into being as a mutaul cooperation organization, but it do have some kinda military role to play. There are two examples that i can quote here,
First, The Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS), this is forms part of SCO's organization, but i think it has a noble aim-so none should be worried about SCO's military role.

RATS is headquartered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It is a permanent organ of the SCO which serves to promote cooperation of member states against the three evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism. The Head of RATS is elected to a three-year term. Each member state also sends a permanent representative to RATS.

Second, Grigory Logninov claimed in April 2006 that the SCO has no plans to become a military bloc; nonetheless he argued that the increased threats of "terrorism, extremism and separatism" make necessary a full-scale involvement of armed forces.

So the military involvement remains there but that doesn't mean that it is there to threaten the West.
