Saudi, S. Korea ink nuclear cooperation deal (AFP)

15 November 2011, 4:34 PM
RIYADH — OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia has signed an agreement with South Korea on developing nuclear power generation to help meet the kingdom’s rising demand, an official statement said on Tuesday.

The announcement came amid mounting concern in the Sunni-ruled kingdom about the nuclear programme of its Shiite rival across the Gulf, Iran, which Riyadh, in common with Western governments, fears may conceal a drive for a nuclear weapons capability.

Saudi Arabia and South Korea “entered into a bilateral agreement designed to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the development and use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes,” said the statement from the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE).

The agreement is aimed at establishing a “legal framework that strengthens scientific, technological and economic cooperation between the two nations, while reaffirming their desire to place the highest priority on nuclear safety and environmental protection,” it added.

The statement said the deal was signed in Seoul but did not say when.

Under its terms, the two countries will cooperate in the “design, construction, operation, maintenance and development of nuclear power plants.” the statement added.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, “aims at developing a sustainable energy mix that includes nuclear energy, to cope with the accelerating local energy demand reaching 8% annually,” said the statement.

The kingdom is seeking to diversify its sources of energy for domestic use.

In February, it signed a cooperation agreement with France on peaceful nuclear energy development, having inked a similar deal with the United States in 2008.

The deals were followed by a similar agreement with Argentina, and the kingdom is also in talks with Britain, China, the Czech Republic and Russia, the statement said.

Saudi Arabia plans to build 16 civilian nuclear reactors in the next two decades at a cost of 300 billion riyals ($80 billion), Abdul Ghani Malibari, coordinator at the Saudi civil nuclear agency, said in June.

He said the kingdom would launch an international invitation to tender for the reactors to be used in power generation and desalination in the desert kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has expressed mounting concern about the growing regional influence of Iran.

The United Nations has imposed successive packages of sanctions against Tehran over its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. Those measures have been backed up by unilateral Western sanctions.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful power generation and medical purposes only.

This post is FULL of mistakes.

Here is one that is not:

KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has signed a bilateral agreement with South Korea for cooperation on the development of nuclear energy as the world's top oil exporter seeks to diversify its energy mix to meet rising power demand, the Saudi government said on Tuesday.

The agreement calls for cooperation in research and development, including building nuclear power plants and research reactors, as well as training, safety and waste management, said the statement by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE).

This is the third nuclear agreement Saudi Arabia signed following similar deals with France and Argentina.

The city, established in 2010, also said it is currently in talks with China, Russia, Czech Republic, Britain and the United States to negotiate "further cooperation".

Although it sits on the world's biggest oil reserves, Saudi Arabia is struggling to keep up with rapidly rising power demand expected to triple by 2032 requiring additional energy plants with total installed power production capacity of around 80 gigawatts (GW).

The kingdom plans to turn to solar and eventually nuclear energy to reduce its need to burn fuel oil for electricity and preserve oil for lucrative export markets. It may build up to 16 nuclear power reactors by 2030, an official at K.A.Care said in June.

Meanwhile, South Korea aims to increase its reliance on nuclear energy, undeterred by Japan's nuclear disaster, its deputy minister for energy and resources policy said in April.

South Korea has 21 reactors in operation with nuclear power accounting for 31.3 percent as of end-2010, according to latest data from the South Korean government. In December 2009, the United Arab Emirates awarded a South Korean consortium a contract to build four nuclear power plants worth $20.4 billion.

This has NOTHING to do with Iran we are going nuclear because we are using too much oil already that is mistake number one from the article.
Mistake number two we NEVER signed a deal with the United States because the US is asking we drop our right of Uranium Enrichment something we will not do since we plan to Enrich the hell out of it.

AFP is a failed new service and a propaganda tool. We signed with France and Argentina and now South Korea and later most likely China but NOT the united states. The US is jumping up and down and keeps sending people here to get us to sign a deal to give up Uranium Enrichment in exchange of their tech and so far we have been giving them a giant middle finger on this.

.
Perhaps work with China on renewable energy if energy requirements are expected to triple in less than 20 years your not going to be able to build reactors fast enough to keep up. After all you have plenty of sunshine.

.
I dont get why they have to mention Iran in everything they do, anyway this is very good news for saudis, they should use alot of solar too.

We never mentioned Iran in this. But stupid AFP does. I already posted a reply blow it I suggest you read it.

I really feel sorry for Saudi Arabia if they think this deal will somehow be a counterweight to Iran. First, they will not build it and all the materials will be imported. Second, they will not have any access to the technology and all the operators will be South Korean. Third, United States is purportedly keeping a close eye on the deal and their South Korean allies will make sure Saudi's don't try anything funny. But what a colossal waste of money this is. In an ideal world Saudi Arabia could have made a joint venture with Iran and easily developed their own nuclear reactors. Iran didn't spend a quarter of this amount for their entire nuclear program.

LMAO what a load of crab. Read the link I posted. How is this suppose to counter Iran? and second it is a JOINT VENTURE for a reason you know. In an Ideal world people like you would not be looking from brainwashed eyes. We are eating too much oil and we need electricity it is as simple as that.

Nuce reactors? But why? After the disaster that took place in Japan i think the last thing any sane leadership of any country should do is build reactors. Saudi has plenty of sunshine, why not build solar panels, much safer and worth the effort.

.
Again the original article is so full of Bull$hit and mistakes and I pointed them out below it but NOOOOOO everyone chooses to believe only what they choose to believe but no worries.

.
saudis will try to build nukes because they are scared of iran the problem is they cannot even build their own they will likely get foreigner to make it for them  Nuclear Saudi Arabia sounds worse then Iran.

lol the only part of the joint venture Saudi will be participating is writing the checks. You won't even be operating the reactors. I'll post the link.

Oh poor poor yahya. It is people like you that make me sad about the state of the Muslim world really.

A report a few months ago said that Saudis wanted to buy Pakistan's nuclear bombs. Where is your science and knowledge.

`Concerns over Saudi wish to buy N-arms` | Newspaper | DAWN.COM

LoL epic fail there buddy. Epic tremendous fail. You just made yourself the laughing stock of the whole forum readers with this post. Absolutely no knowledge on world affairs. no knowledge of nuclear processing. And a somewhat irrelevant post. and on top of that a report which is not clear on its objectives.

Man you still have a lot to learn. Some of the more expert Saudi bashers here need to take you under their wing. Anyone will you please teach this guy the way of the business??
