MENAFN - Arab News) Tabuk University students on Monday announced that they had built a drone.

The drone, called the Saham 2, was among several projects completed at the university.

The aircraft was designed and built by university students, and constructed of high-quality fiber and other materials, said Salahaddin Hafiz Omar, supervisor general of the university's Giftedness and Creativity Unit Professor.

The plane will be used to monitor floods and send reports on the direction and depth of the rains. The drone will utilize sensors on the ground.

It can also be used to report the locations of stranded people whom it can detect through a thermal camera installed within it and connected to a radar, he said.

Omar said the university is in need of financial support required to implement and develop several innovative projects including the installation of thermal cameras in the new aircraft.

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles piloted by remote computer control.
Drones are built in a wide range of sizes and configurations. They are usually used in military applications, but Tabuk University officials say that will only be deployed for civil work.

However, drones are best known today for its aerial bombing capabilities, mostly used by the US military.

Great achievement. We had minor flood two weeks ago here in tabuk due ro heavy rains.

Great achievement.

Yes, and snow a few weeks ago in Tabuk Province in the mountains.

We are constantly moving forward. It is great to see.

Which one? One seems to be a quadrocopter, and other is a light UAV.

Solar powered ones at that. They want funding to perfect them. Amd since it made it to the news they will get it. But I think the light UAV is the more near complete one.

It remotely monitors flood or water activities in an area by cameras and sensors and other measuring equipments and sends the data to control station.

Any test flight video? Also are those mini solar panels on the tail of the UAV?

I found some pics

Good work.

There's one thing I can't stop thinking about what's with the solar panels? There are so MANY solar panels on areas that won't get much light, like under the tail facing towards the ground or facing inwards on the tail.

Solar panels aren't the all too efficient anyway so imagine how useless and a burden in terms of wight they are in areas they have no use.

It's kinda hard to ignore. I know they're students but GAH! Logic?

@Mosamania Operational drone or a research project?

It is not yet done, they require further funding which is why they showcased their project earlier than usual to the media hoping a company will fund them. Most likely they did.

As this picture shows, they did not put solar panels under the wing.

Instead the solar panels you see from the bottom are the same as the ones on the top.
