Jews and Hindues have no right to lecture us on are religion, so please stay out and mind your own business. For those who advocate on the assumption that this is a old practise are clearly wrong. For Muslims the law set down by the Holy Prophet (SAW) are binding and are accepted in whatever the time frame and society..its the Sunnah in following the Holy Prophet (SAW).

1. Prophet (SAW) did not set down any laws. All the laws for the mankind are set down by Allah (SWT). All the Prophets were messengers of Allah, including the last Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

2. All the laws are described in Quran, which is Furqan (criterion); that means, if we want to seek the authenticity of any other religious laws etc. we need to compare them with Quranic teachings. If they conform with Quran then, we can accept them; if they don't then we can reject it. The problem with majority of Muslims is that they elevate Hadith to the level of Quran and the narrators of Hadith to the level of Prophets.

3. For marriage, a person needs to be of 'Sound Judgement' according to Quran. Nobody, at age 9 or 10 can be of sound judgement.

4. The hadith that describe age of Ayesha (RAH) at the time of her marriage are at best weak and at worst total fabrication. A few years back, I had read an article on the web, in which by documenting other hadiths, the author had demonstrated that the age of Ayesha (RAH) could only be in late teens and no less.
