Saudi ‘gift’ of 20 bullet-proof vehicles for Sharifs

50% discount on oil imports to scrap Iran Pakistan pipeline for next 5 years sound like a good deal to me, dont think Saudi care who operates Gawadar.

Its not Saudi but UAE QATAR ETC. They have been sponsor of BLA also told by Musharif once when he warned them. Hamid Mir witnesed himself Taliban getting money from some Sheik.

The Sharifs are hugely in debt of the Saudis and so is the military establishment.

Pakistan's dream of an independent foreign policy can never materialize with Sharifs in power.

May be the people want it this way.

Do you think a contract or penalties would mean much to Nawaz Sharif if Saudi Arabia sweetens the pot as it can?

bilateral contracts are binding agreements

what the baldie says or what the saudis royal government say are not applicable

Pakistan has defaulted on a sovereign guarantee, not just contracts, before. It can do so again, sir.

Govt defaults on sovereign guarantees to IPPs

Contracts are only pieces of paper, just like the Constitution famously described by Gen Zia.

I think Saudi Arabia tried desperately but failed. The deal is a done deal.

The final contract will be signed on the 15th, and we still have to find about a billion dollars to fund 800 km of the pipeline within our borders. The pipeline deal is not done just yet.

i dont think it's valid to compare IPP contract to a bilateral contract between both Iran & Pakistan

now of course Iran not being a member of the WTO, i dont know how a reneged contract would be dealt with; but it would set a pretty awful precedent if after years of negotiations and after pipeline construction already began on Iran side that Pakistan just simply backed out

some intellectually lazy politicians/civilians may think contracts are only pieces of paper but professional people who conduct business properly do not think that way.....so lets see how professional of a course we undertake or whether in the short term we think we can toss contracts aside and face gas shortages

as for Nawaz Sharif and his allies in Saudi --- i guess they've reconciled. They were not so fond of him when he violated the agreement HE made to stay out of politics (in return for the Pak establishment dropping of criminal charges against him). So much for promises, pledges and contracts (verbal or otherwise) ey?

the guys a closet taleban anyways and he's not even ELIGIBLE to run -- it's worth mentioning. He served 2 terms already as PM. And he failed to deliver on both those terms in that capacity.

It is yaar.

If it wasn't, Iran would not have spent billions of dollars building and completing the pipeline within its borders. Pakistani Government / Military was only waiting for the right moment for the inauguration which happened on Monday March 11, 2013.

It all will depend on who wins the election. It is only a few weeks away.

Iran has spent $250 million building its portion of the pipeline, and the inauguration was a final drama by Zardari before the PPP government completed its term. The final negotiations are still going on:

Gas pipeline: Pakistan, Iran to meet to finalise construction contract – The Express Tribune

"ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and Iran are set to resume talks in mid-April to finalise the award of a multi-million-dollar contract to an Iranian firm for laying a gas pipeline inside Pakistani territory, a process that has already been delayed because of some bottlenecks.

“An Iranian team will arrive in Islamabad on April 15 and 16 to finalise the award of contract to Tadbir Energy of Iran,” a source said.

The contract would have been awarded by the previous government, which completed its tenure on March 16, had the finance ministry approved the term sheet of contract, submitted by Tadbir Energy, and grant of sovereign guarantees on time, sources said.

The ministry gave the approval to the term sheet and sovereign guarantees quite late on March 15.

Pakistan was set to award the construction contract to Tadbir Energy at the time of the official launch of work on the project on the Pak-Iran border, which was inaugurated by President Asif Ali Zardari and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on March 11. However, no agreement was signed."

Brother, main aap ko kaisay samjahoun? Look who's come crawling back?

India in talks with Iran and US on the gas pipeline project
Tuesday April 6, 2013

Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Veerappa Moily said that the Indian Government is holding talks with Iran and the United States to discuss sanctions in relation to the gas pipeline project.

Moily said the pipeline project was beneficial for India and that is why they were conducting discussions with the Iranian and U.S. Governments, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.

External Affairs Minister of India Salman Khurshid earlier said that India and Iran are likely to discuss the stalled Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline at a joint commission meeting in the first quarter of the year.

IPI project had been stalled over cost of gas as well as security of the pipeline.

India has been boycotting formal talks on the project since 2007 over security concerns. Iran and Pakistan have already signed pacts to implement the long-talked project on bilateral basis.

Sir, the bottom line is that people are still talking and negotiating. There is no final signed contract as of yet.

Bahi Ji, baaqi di vi khabar shamil karya karo na. These are just on going small agreements that will go on even after the pipeline is pumping gas.

... “In the final round of negotiations with Tadbir Energy on March 16 and 17 in Tehran, a Pakistani team told the Iranians that the finance ministry had finally approved the term sheet, paving the way for the award of contract,” an official said.

Initial agreement has already been reached with Tadbir Energy, but final accord is awaited. The cabinet has waived Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules to award the contract directly to the Iranian firm.

Pakistani public sector firm Interstate Gas Systems (ISGS) and Tadbir Energy inked the initial contract in Tehran. Though western governments have imposed sanctions on Iran, Tadbir Energy does not fall within their ambit. It is controlled by the Imam Khomeini Foundation, one of Iran’s largest charitable groups.

Tadbir Energy will undertake all engineering, procurement and construction work on the first phase of the pipeline, starting from the Pak-Iran border, costing around $250 million.

In the second phase, the financing facility will be increased by up to $250 million, depending on discussions regarding the involvement of Tadbir Energy in gas distribution in Pakistan. It will act as the lead contractor along with local subcontractors. ...

Both projects are still not finished. They can be considered achievement only when they are delivering on their promises, but not before.

yes but those two projects are way against uncle sam's wishes and even initiating them is an achievement which i never expected of this government.

I think PTI might cut PmL N vote bank in half I guess they wont have much say at a provincial level yet alone at a national level.
